Why was this not sent out on the announcements email list? I only heard about this now and I could have REALLY used this just this week.

I subscribe to the announcements list JUST to hear about things like this. :)

Keep up the good work,

Hello Jeff

I tested it this morning on a call from Mexico City to NY. It worked very well.

Thanks for this good news.

Posted by: Carlos Charry at December 22, 2003 04:41 PM

works great.

Posted by: Florin at December 22, 2003 03:37 PM

Hint to X-Lite users: I couldn't get this to work with the G711u codec disabled (i.e. "greyed out"). I was getting the same "404 Not Found... fr(2)" message. Once I enabled that codec, everything was fine.

Posted by: Peter Rukavina at December 22, 2003 03:11 PM

Thanks to the people supporting this in the foreground as well as in the background, my parents and I called several US and Canadian numbers from France with great quality from our ATA186-I1.

Have a great holiday season and best wishes for 2004.

Posted by: Dominique Phommahaxay at December 22, 2003 04:36 AM

I tried to use the service for US and Canada by dialing 2 diffrent area code, anytime and everytime I dial any number, the message tells me "the user you are calling is offline" one of the number I am calling is my home number, I am on braodband and there is no firewall.

Posted by: H Feiz at December 22, 2003 02:02 AM

Craig,

Just as the message states, you need to have your FWD client directly connected to be able to take advantage of this offer. This is not open to
people on asterisk since we can't tell whether one or one hundred people are connected to the individual network.

Happy Holidays,

Jeff

p.s. you can now place free calls in the UK - just dial *44 and the number.

Posted by: Jeff Pulver at December 22, 2003 01:14 AM

I have an Asterisk box and I get the same message too!! It says the service is available to FWD members only. This is funny as I know my box is registered with FWD but ..... any ideas here??

Posted by: Raju at December 22, 2003 12:38 AM

When I try to make a call through my Asterisk box i get a message that says "This service is only ava. to FWD members go to www...." I am able to call any other FWD numnber without issue. Any ideas?

Posted by: craig at December 21, 2003 11:32 PM

Does anyone have the installer file for the previous version of FWD? I uninstalled the version I had before, and am trying to use the new version, but I cant get audio from the othr end.

Posted by: Doug at December 21, 2003 10:08 PM

Jeff!

Wow...FWD bestows a gift of Xmas FWD - PSTN gateways!

But alas...I cannot call my beloved Canadian numbers at all...I have been trying for the last few days.

Happy holidays!

Posted by: Nick Kovats at December 21, 2003 09:17 PM

I used the service for the first time early this morning (Dec 21)... worked like a charm.

Started to deteriorate around 11:30 PST, and hasn't been too good since (distant end all complain of "choppy" and/or "swirly" speech.

I'm on a cable-modem high-speed link. Nonethless, thanks very much Jeff... it certainly is great for this old pensioner to be able to call up a few old friends, and still keep food on the table. :-)

I finally tried using x-lite to call the USA and Canada. I got a lot of interference. I called from Uganda and am on a shared cable connection with about a 28k bandwidth. I thought I would restart the PC to clearout any applications that might be bogging the system. Then all calls to any ou number in the USA/Canada was giving me the msg "the number you are calling is currently offline". Any idea what might be happening? Is there a conflict with MSN running at the same time? Please help as I would like to make calls to Canada.

Posted by: Majid Alladina at December 21, 2003 09:21 AM

Finally got it working with X-Lite!I also have ICONNECTHERE configured so I had to change a few settings. For those of you having voice breakup problems, try disabling the speaker/microphone LEDs on X-Lite.

Hi,
I placed a call using Win XP Home, XTEN Lite to *1816nnnnnnn and I hear no ring tone when ringing, i hear no voice when answered however the party called is able to hear my voice when speaking. Any ideas? My router is an SMC Model No. SMC7004AWBR with DHCP enabled and connected through COMCAST at 3MB.
Thanks,
Ken

Posted by: Ken Mourey at December 19, 2003 11:25 PM

Well, I just tried to call my mom (*15194720776). I could hear her really well (much better quality than what I get when I call 411). But she couldn't hear me. I called her back using a landline and asked... she told me she could only hear a sort of garbled sound.

I'm sitting behind a NAT at ip address 80.238.38.71 (it's a cable modem) and I'm using X-Lite build 2.0b4.

Posted by: Shawn from Switzerland at December 19, 2003 06:56 PM

Hello:

I used your service, I must say it's great in quality :) But I got a little problem :-( when I lost carrier from my ISP and I was in a call. When I went up I kept getting packets from 65.39.205.114 to my IP 200.64.212.* (Guess you can retrival which one was :> ) I went from a normal queued packets to a DoS :( It started at Dec 18 21.30 EST at least until Dec 19 02.12 EST when I last checked. Was my call active since I didn't hang up?

Thanks a lot for your help.

This is great but it seems like calls to 858 doesn't work either.

Is anyone at Pulver.com compiling a list of working area codes?

Hi!! .. i have a problem.. i don't know why always that i try to call to a *1626 always .. give me the answer of " The User you calling is currently offline" can anybody know why is this ??

Posted by: Jorge Freeze at December 18, 2003 09:23 PM

works great to several area codes, but no joy reaching 805 area code. I see "404 Not Found" in X-Lite. But hey, for free, I'm looking looking a gift horse in the mouth! (But if anyone knows if 805 is reachable and the problem is mine, I would love to hear about it!)

Many thanks to FWD for the nice gift!

Posted by: jcocula at December 18, 2003 07:19 PM

How to configure X-Lite in XP? No idea at all and no help file teaches this.

Posted by: Amit at December 18, 2003 01:20 PM

Humm..
According with some open source bashing folks (SCO ?), this must be anti-capitalism, and can't be good :-)
What next ? (Thanks for the effort from FWD)
BTW, when should we expect Libretel to go live for FWD -> PSTN calls :-), I wonder if this is using some Libretel gw :-)...?

AceMan, for xlite, enable G711u G711a GSM iLBC SPX and you will call to usa free :)

Posted by: joako at December 18, 2003 06:07 AM

hello. The service seems to be down now. I cant call any area code. I get a Call failed: 404 Not Found...fr(2) in X-Lite. I can call other sip phones OK.

Posted by: AceMan at December 18, 2003 05:55 AM

I've discovered a bug with this feature: If you terminate the call before the called party answers (i.e. the person you are calling isn't answering, so you decide to hang up), the called party's phone continues to ring.

Posted by: Karl at December 17, 2003 11:07 PM

Very cool for the areas it does work. The only thing is that dialing the 850 area code (Pensacola Florida) does not work while (540) Virginia does. Not bad for calling from Australia to the U.S for free :)

A BIG Thanks
Norman
