Quotes taken out of context...
There are times when something is said which means one thing but when taken out of context could lead someone to think it meant something else.
Earlier today I was asked about IP Communications and CALEA and what said was that with regard to Free World Dialup, if asked, we would be willing to provide all the information that we had available to us. This is totally consistent with what I've said in the past and what we told the FBI/DOJ when we met with them last May.
When pressed on the subject, I further explained that since FWD is a signaling network and doesn't normally get the content/media of a call, in order to be able to seamlessly perform what would otherwise might be a "wire tap" on other networks, is something that most likely could be done but before I know for absolute certainty, we would need to create our own internal "science project" to understand exactly how to do what would be ask and understand all of the technical issues at hand.
This also doesn't mean that there are not existing next-generation technologies that could be combined to also achieve the same goal.
As the IP Communication Industry continues to evolve and the IP Communication networks continue to evolve, we should all expect the needs and expectations of law enforcement to morph as the underlying technologies continue to evolve.
