Skype Discovering Presence
According to several stories circulating on the web at the moment, Skype has discovered presence and will enpower their customers with an ability to leverge this.
This is a cool innovation.
Thing is, this isn't new. Members of Free World Dialup have been able to share a web based presence icon since early 2003.
Examples of these icons are posted to the FWD beta page. In the case of the FWD icons, presence is shared and a click thru will trigger the launching of the FWD Talk application. This is something I thought was very cool when Ed Guy gave me a demo of this in September, 2003.
Until now, these presence icons are not something that we promoted all that much, but they can be seen being used by our members on the pages of our support forums and above.
Thumbs up to Skype for doing what they can to educate consumers about presence. If they can do for presence what they have already done for VoIP, everyone involved in the presence space will benefit.
It seems to me that Skype has adopted the Microsoft Software Engineering principal of "...not always having to create something new, but rather doing whatever it takes to take what already exists and just make it work...better."
