Newsweek Story on VoIP

Newsweek - Jan 24th Issue: Signal Lost

A mainstream VoIP story that contains a little VoIP "history" and perspective.

This timing of the story is pretty good -- February 15th will mark the 10th Anniversary of the release of VocalTec's Internet Phone. It would be great to see Feb 15th become known as "International VoIP Day."

Have you VoIP'ed today?

IBM released one that looked like a phone about this same time IIRC. I used it in OS/2, and you HAD to know the IP of the connecting machine.

"Signal Lost" doesn't seem to be nearly as good a title for the article as "Pulver Found"!

;-) Rock on, Jeff!

Great article that does a good job of describing the history of VoIP and the current issues and challenges in a manner that the average person can understand.

The next 2-3 years are going to be interesting.

I fondly remember that app. I think I was either 12 or 13 when I first used it, and found it incredibly frustrating because it connected to standard IRC networks. I believe many networks started banning it simply because it was so disruptive (you would have clueless users trying to start a voice chat with standard users).

I'm glad VoIP has evolved so much since then.
