Catching up with Jason Krikorian and John Perry Barlow:

Our Peripheral Visionaries' IP-Based Communications Policy Summit brought together quite a diverse group of people, including a couple of people I’ve been a fan from afar: Jason Krikorian of Sling Media and John Perry Barlow.

Yesterday afternoon, Jason and John Perry Barlow shared a panel with: Ed Black, President & CEO, Computer & Communications Industry Association; Bill Maher, Partner, former FCC Bureau Chief, Morrison & Foerster; Robert Pepper, Chief of Policy Development, FCC; Gary Shapiro, President and CEO, Consumer Electronics Association.

During the ”Stranger in a Strange Land or Digital Fortress” panel, Jason demonstrated his Slingbox personal broadcaster, which in my book is an example of a disruptive technology product since it helps makes your home TV (and other personal analog video content) available to you to be delivered over the internet to be delivered for viewing anywhere in the world. In the process, his device challenges the status quo with regard to digital media rights and puts some other issues in their side. This said, I believe seeing his demo helped expand the minds and/or raise the eyebrows of some of our Beltway friends.

John Perry Barlow’s presence was felt during the same panel discussion and I found myself pretty much in sync his approach to technology policy. While I waited until our “Net Freedom Reception” to sit down and start talking to John Perry, our conversation/interaction continued past the reception and into a post-dinner event that we ended up hosting at The Palm.

I am looking forward to hosting both Jason and John Perry at Fall 2005 VON in Boston in September…even if September is “…so far away.”

Jeff, John Perry Barlow, Jason Krikorian
