When do we remove the prefix from [Tele][IP]communications?

The first Telegraph was actually a form of semaphore, and the next used lights. Our perceptions of what something is does not always reflect what it can be or what it will become.

Sometime in the near future there will come a time when the "Tele" will be removed from [Tele]Communications. Around the same time I'd like to believe that we get to drop the "IP" from [IP]Communications.

When this happens, we will be talking about the new Communications industry, an industry that represents the coming together of what was the Telecommunications industry, the computing industry, what was known as the communications industry and well as the commercial Internet. (For many they will read this and think Computer Telephony Integration [CTI])

While the world may not let us change our name just yet, our industry has been moving in the right direction (by in large) over the past 9 years. This is the industry that is represented whenever we hold one of our VON events around the world.

I do hope that the day will come sometime soon that some of the traditional “telecom” dinosaur operators around the world also recognize the need to support the Internet Freedoms and use their “power” to provide unfettered high speed access to the internet and thereby providing a platform to help innovation at the edge by encouraging unrelated third parties to deploy their applications in an “Internet friendly” way.

There is so much wrong with the world today I think the brightest area is technology. It is the one thing that could make most, if not all the worlds problems today, irrelevant tomorrow.

At least that is my hope.

Uh, boss, I'm going to take slight issue with the concept of removing entirely the concept of "tele" from "telecommunications".

Our goal is obviously the same -- that is to say, my goal is, by virtue of my employment (not to mention our obvious overlapping sympathies), your goal; or more precisely, and the immortal words of Aladdin's genie, "Your wish is my command."

With regard to the issue, I think the "tele" is an essential designator that has to be included, at least in the dialogue over the regulatory treatment of communications. With IP technology, "communications" in all its variants becomes just an application. But it is an application that rides on various "tele" (or transmission media). I think we have to underscore that, regardless of the infinite supply of communications providers, there is a limited number of "tele" providers. That is what the layered regulatory model is about, that is what the Computer Inquiry analysis is about, that is what antitrust analysis could focus on if applied effectively. Even the Net Freedom concept has to ensure that those that control the "tele" do not leverage that control to thwart communications competition.

While unaffiliated application providers don't bring the "tele", someone does, and that entity has to be, at least lightly, monitored to ensure communications application and service competition.

Eliminating the term "tele" could turn into an Orwellian Newspeak ploy that would get any controller of a bottleneck transmission facility out from any government oversight.

Your humble servant,
Jonathan
