Wi-Fi Battle @ Logan Airport: Free vs. Paid

At Logan Airport in Boston, Continental Airlines is offering free Wi-Fi to customers in their lounge.

The state governmental agency responsible for offering Wi-Fi access at Logan Airport, Massport, doesn't like the fact that they can't compete against "free." The agency charges $7.95 a day for Wi-Fi access and do not like the competition.

As a frequency flyer, I'd like to see all airports offer free Wi-Fi access to travelers. Eventually the airports will realize what jetBlue already has...that providing Wi-Fi access is like providing air-conditioning and electricity. I don't see Massport charging airline travelers for air-conditioning, so why should they continue to charge for Wi-Fi?

At the moment the fighting has moved to Continental Airline’s use of antennas at the airport and they have filed a petition at the FCC requesting a "Declaratory Ruling" in this matter. Public comments are due on August 29th.

My hope is that in the end Continental Airline wins this battle and that any and all airlines can offer free Wi-Fi access at Logan and other airports in and around the United States.

For a contrasting example of how to do this right, see Brandywine Airport http://n99.com/wifi/ in West Chester, PA. The airport took the lead and provided WiFi access not only in the terminal, but nearly the whole airport surface for use by customers and tennants. So now you can get the latest weather updates while sitting on the ramp or taxiway.

When I was in Beverly I remember waiting for the ALWAYS delayed Laguardia flight and using MASSPORT access. It sucked. The interface to pay was clunky and the service was not that robust. Continental can't fly a damn plane but it sounds like they got WiFi right, at least at Logan. Peace ... out.

Amen, Brother. I have been pushing for Wi-Fi access for quite some time now at RDU airport. Too bad Cingular snapped it up and charged for it. But at the other FBO at RDU, Southern Jet, catering to the private pilot, Wi-Fi is free. In Newark Airport's Continental President's Club Wi-Fi is free, but nowhere else. As I stated in my blog, if I had free Wi-Fi access at RDU I would arrive a bit earlier then normal and finish the day's work from the Airport, but under the current system I'll stay at home, work, or the out-of-town coffee shop as long as possible to complete my work before heading to the airport. I then arrive just in time for my flight and add to the overcrowding, etc. It's all so counter-productive. Just free the bits and give access to the customers.
