Surprise, Surprise...Vonage plans to file for IPO:
Five years ago, during the summer of 2000 after Jeffrey Citron joined the Min-X team and came in as the lead investor, he told me that he was looking at any investment with a five year time horizon. In early 2001 Min-X went thru a "restart process", refocused and changed its name to Vonage. It was at that point that their focus changed from being an on-line "minutes broker" between service providers to becoming the first commercial provider of voice over broadband services in the USA.
When Vonage launched their consumer voice over broadband service in March, 2002, they did so at a time when everyone else was on the sidelines just watching and waiting. Vonage's early success came from their commitment to a vision that in a broadband enabled world, "voice" really is just an application.
While knowing about the "five year window" didn't mean much to me at the time, as time moved forward and Vonage continued to gain customers, market share and raise outside capital, I started to suspect that they would be filing their S-1 by Q3 2005 and would be looking to go IPO when the market conditions would support it.
I woke up this morning and saw a number of stories about the pending Vonage IPO: The Daily Deal, The Wall Street Journal and in Om Malik's blog. Looks like we are getting another step closer to seeing a Vonage IPO.
I would agree with Om, the Vonage S-1 should make for a really good read. :)

I've been with vonage for over a year now, and have integrated it to two different homes for family. I've had very little trouble with it. When I took over 30 days to transfer the number, I was awarded the money back for the 2 months (estimate) it took for the transfer and then an additonal month for good measure.
Unless its my own networking issue, Vonage is great and I'll be curious to see the good things they plan to push out to compete.

Who would want to invest?
I think Vonage has a big problem. I tried to transfer my business number from Qwest to Vonage, and Vonage dropped the number on the transfer. Qwest and Vonage each said it was the other’s fault, but Vonage had the authority and therefore the responsibility to be sure it was done right. It took almost two months for Vonage to restore the line and cost me over $8000 in client business. I put the log, correspondence, and everything at http://www.netadventures.biz/vonageproblem.htm. I don’t see that Vonage has much in the way of core values or ethics, and what they did was probably illegal. I’ve complained to the FCC, but the current Administration has gone south Something about the Emperor’s new clothes I think.

Just an additional note: If we make anything from our stock, SONeTech has re-encarnated as The Services-oriented Open Network Technology Institute (SONeTech.org). I am retiring from Lockheed Martin after I'm 60 in Feb. to look into DNA computing and to try to find the Torah encoded in DNA. (I'm thinking of starting by looking for the "schma").

Hi Jeff - Just checking in.
I was interested to see what eBay paid for Skype.

(For those other than Jeff: I was the Min-X CTO before Jeff C. took over)

Jeff: Still premature to extend congratulations. Let's see the IPO first. Nonetheless will be rooting for you as it has been a long time in coming since the early IMTC and VON days.
