Microsoft and Yahoo! Interconnect: but not until Q2 2006, so why announce now?

Another sign that we are living in the days of a new bubble: Two internet companies make a joint announcement early in Q4 2005 for a service that doesn’t become available until sometime in Q2 2006.

Today’s announcement of Yahoo! and Microsoft interconnect for IM and VoIP services would have been a lot more effective, if today was also the day that consumers could take advantage of the interconnected services.

I miss the days when a company would make an announcement and deliver on the announcement in the same day, same week, same month, same quarter or even the same year.

>>GoogleTalk, and IMfederation<<

Jabber is the real threat, on which the IM part of GTalk is based. IMfederation simply suggests that everyone use Jabber. That in itself isn't threatening.

Could it be by any chance even in minimal part due to the pressure they are getting from GoogleTalk, and IMfederation?

Good point, Jeff. In fact, this is precisely why Apple's announcements these days are so highly-anticipated...and why they are covered with such fervor by the media...because typically the item(s) being trumpeted are available in the stores on the very day they are announced!

Take today's announcement of the video iPod, for example: . The first stirrings in the press were made a full week ago when the press invitations were issued for today's big announcement, and over the past week the various media outlets pondered and pundit-ed what today's announcement would reveal (most of them being correct in their predictions this time around, due largely to the "premiere" nature of the invite). Today, Steve Jobs announced the video iPod, which is available for order online and in Apple stores nationwide. Not only that, but he also announced the availability of video content via the iTunes Music Store...which is live as I type.

Talk about delivery!
