Meg Whitman: "Voice phone calls to be free within years"
Reuters: Voice phone calls to be free within years: eBay CEO
"In a few short years, users can expect to make telephone calls for free, with no per-minute charges, as part of a package of services through which carriers make money on advertising or transaction fees, eBay's chief executive said on Wednesday..."

I paid for 3 items for ebay,in 16 and 24 november 2006,and I received..nothing!!!Can you help me?
Posted by: Horia Picu at December 23, 2006 02:16 PM
I gave up selling and buying on eBay for 18 months because some people (mostly sellers) had become so MEAN and DISHONEST and RIFE WITH FRAUD. I've TRIED to 'come back' - but there are now actual BUSINESSES whose sole activity/earnings come from defrauding the high bidder. I'm honest, caring and eager to please and follow the directions of the sellers. However, I have been cheated out of THOUSANDS - just since the summer of 2005. eBay TALKS the talk of helping those of us who have been cheated and retaliated against. But I get NO sense of commitment to help from eBay. I get a sense ONLY that eBay thinks WE the eBay customers should REPORT problems - because doing so helps EBAY's reputation. In MY case, I'm concerned about MY eBay reputation. Feedback retaliation, sellers allowed by eBay to VOID their legally binding contract with the high bidder, auction misrepresentations, Photo and description frauds (no actual items; just photos and fake descriptions of items) and on and on and on - are HUGE problems on eBay. I select sellers with 100% positive feedback - only to learn that TWO of them are FRAUDS. I've even won monetary disputes and given eBay enough information so that eBay actually REMOVED the fraudulent sellers. But - the sellers come back immediately with new IDs - AND - eBay LEAVES the undeserved negative feedback on my site. I've thought about just 'playing the game along with most other eBayers' by just giving and receiving positive feedback - no matter how much money I've lost or how horrible I've been treated. But that's WRONG; that's like 'pushing a child to grade level after grade level - even though the child cannot read or write'. That's WRONG. If one has never had to 'go through the process' of contacting and communication with an eBay representative, one would think (just by looking at the 'help' sites), that doing so would be easy and user friendly. However, it is NOT a friendly or easy process. eBay uses THOUSANDS of words to explain its rules and agreements and legal statements, etc. But WE (the wronged who are TRYING to explain ourselves), are limited to 500 characters and NO opportunity to easily submit photo records and NO opportunity to send attachments and MUST have used the woefully LACKING process called eBay messaging in order to even qualify, etc. etc. I'd like to actually WRITE to an eBay 'big wig,' but (for me at least), 'they' are 'untouchable.' It's very difficult for me to believe that I am 'alone' in this world of defrauding eBayers when the item is a high end expensive and much sought after collectible. The only thing I know to do - to warn others (since I cannot access the 'higher ups' at eBay) is to find a news, web, and/or book forum where I can write MY personal experiences with what (to me) has become the scariest place on the internet - eBay. All I've ever wanted to do on eBay - is to purchase items for THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM. I never buy personal items. But the defrauders see me coming - and they know WAY before I do, that they are pretty much 'safe' hiding in eBay - because eBay 'justice' either doesn't happen - or it doesn't stick. eBay 'justice' is borne financially by each of us victims - one person at a time - $1500 here or $2500 there. We 'bear' it - in a world that has not yet made RULES or LAWS (that stick) for internet fraud. Just yesterday, I received (and eBay is ALLOWING) a neg FB from a seller who has received payment from me TWICE (the second time via SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION). The auction ended Dec 28 and I sent payment Dec 31. He's in the SAME STATE as me. I waited 3 weeks for him to cash my check before writing him and asking him to cash it. He responded with (and I QUOTE) "payment not received owner not happy." That's when I learned my item was a consignment item. That's when I asked him to please LOOK for my payment amongst his holiday mail. That's when things got really ugly. I sent a SECOND payment using Priority mail with signature confirmation. He has BOTH checks; he has my auction win; AND he says the contract is voided (can he DO that?) and he has left really nasty feedback (I've so far used restraint and left no feedback on him). I just want him to CASH one of the checks, send the other check and my item to me). Does that sound so difficult? What I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT GET is why eBay LETS this obvious WRONG go on. eBay auction sites SAY THAT THE CONTRACT IS LEGAL AND BINDING. Why should ANY of us TRUST this statement to be true if EBAY LETS A SELLER 'VOID' a legal binding and PAID FOR auction AND then allows seller to 'jump the gun' and leave UNDESERVED negative feedback? THEN - TODAY - eBay Square Trade sends me a 'solicitation' stating they 'noticed' I have a 'new negative' and for a 'small fee' they can help me to possibly get the negative removed. WHY SHOULD I PAY FOR A WRONG EBAY HELPED TO CREATE? Like I said earlier, for ME, eBay is the SCARIEST place on the internet. If a reader knows how I can reach a president or ceo of eBay by email (or other way), please let me know. I will write my book during my summer break from teaching. Look for the by line - byclaudia (byclaudia@mindspring.com). There will be no editorializing; I will just paste actual back and forth emails chronologically (including those from 'eBay Support' and let the reader make his/her own decisions. The book will be AT LEAST 200 pages. Whomever it is that has provided this opportunity for me to tell the TRUTH, thank you. Claudia

Dave interesting.
Bubble might be a word.
Commodity and mediation are two that stick in my head. No doubt that the spend does not justify the gain at the moment. It's lightyears short.
Opinion based. Competitive advantage is about moving something from zero sum to positive some gaining short terms supernormal profits. Why did Niklas sell? Was something rotten? Rotting? Dead? For sure the micro economics of Skype work/ed, sic. (Consumers drive demand). Maybe they realised that the NAT issues create to many issues when trying to upscale to corporates.
Screwed the pooch is mild.
I wonder do pirranah have visions?
The Cat and the pirranaha. Percieved Titan versus prey. Titan takes prey, but pays the price by death, stemming from 1000 cuts.
Markets will be unmerciful in the end.

I've been thinking about this, and ol' Meg really has really screwed the pooch. Rather than pissing away $4 bln on Skype, she should have been figuring out ways to package and sell historical auction data. This data would be hugely valuable to people across many industries (not to mention collectors, insurance adjusters, financial auditors, and historians) and their incremental cost for this revenue is almost zero.
Instead, she's dragged them into an industry which she herself believes will produce little to no revenue as a service offering and is only tangentially relevant to ebay's core mission.
This is why having the general public investing in companies they don't understand is dumb: the companies end up with more money than they can intelligently allocate. Can we say bubble?

I have to comment that this is hardly a visionary future statement. My cat recently communicated something similar. Sounds like the CEO hasn't quite figured the peer-2-peer functionality of the net quite yet. Humm, hardly a ground breaking story.
Tell her to take a look at Skype, you know that place they just purchased for the marketing department! No worries, it does NAT traversal, so no need to call desktop support! :)
Tom.
Ps: No not NAT the receptionist.
