Getting Ready for Spring 2006 VON:

Tomorrow morning I'm leaving on an early jetBlue flight for San Jose.

Om, hope you are enjoying the quiet before the VON, and Andy, I do hope that you find a few good woman at VON for a future blogger panel.

This time around I've tried to balance meetings at and during Spring VON with time I plan on spending on our exhibit floor.

As I'm getting ready to leave for Spring 2006 VON, I find myself feeling very positive about the state of the worldwide IP Communications industry. These past twelve months have been quite amazing. Back in 1995 when I coined the term "VON" it was defined as 'Voice and Video on the Net.' But for commercial purposes, when I launched the first VON Conference back in April, 1997, I defined VON as "Voice on the Net" since that was the technology which I felt had the best chance for success at that time.

During the past 10 years, it has been great to watch the Voice side of VON grow up and become "mainstream" both in the way the technology is being used across the communications industry as well as a disruptor of worldwide public policy. The advent of the adoption of concept of "Voice as an application" has changed the way we communicate forever. There is no turning back to the analog ways of the past and a new communications/computing industry has grown up which leverages the possibilities that are only possible because of Internet Protocol (IP).

Personally, the past twelve months have been real exciting not only for the growth of the Voice part of VON inside the world of Communications, but because the other "V" of VON has also emerged as a platform for the future - and that is the Video side of "VON." In fact it feels as if the two V's of VON: "Voice on the Net" and "Video on the Net" are really twins...separated at birth...by 10 Years.

As I look to the future, the overall prospects for Voice on the Net have never been greater and the opportunities in the emerging world of Video on the Net feel deeper and stronger than what was present at the first VON event back in 1997.

And while the future for the worldwide IP Communications industry is bright, I can not help but remember the formation of the VON Coalition ten years ago. Ten years later, there are a number of issues which are on the immediate horizon that need to be addressed and one of the biggest issues that can and will effect the future of the widespread adoption of IP Communications is the current battle raging on Net Neutrality. I know that the Net Neutrality issue will be explored at length in the hallways, during the lunches, at our Communications Policy Summit and in a number of other sessions at Spring 2006 VON. If you care about the future direction of Communications Policy, you should strongly consider signing onto our letter in support of Net Neutrality.

As our Spring 2006 VON Week starts to unfold, I'm looking forward to greeting the people who will be visiting from all parts of the world to network, sell, buy, learn, invest, develop partnerships and strike deals. I am looking forward to catching up with some of the VON Alumni spending time with us in San Jose as well as meeting some of the newer players who are attending VON for the very first time.

During the past week, I've been using pulverati to keep tabs on the VON buzz in the blogosphere and I've been a daily visitor to pulverWeb to keep track of the latest news in the IP Communications space.
