Counting Crows @ Spring 2006 VON:

Since producing the first VON conference back in 1997, I have had the opportunity to meet a quite a number of artists who performed at our conference parties. As it turned out, over the years, some of these artists I ended up becoming friends with and others I have never seen since the night of their performance. Of all the first time meetings I have had with a band/artist, it was my meeting with Adam Duritz, his dad and the rest of Counting Crows that still stands out as something special.

While we were meeting backstage, I had an opportunity to tell Adam about my appreciation for his non-linear songwriting and ask him a few questions, including exactly what was up with that twelve second delay in the recording of Round Here? I also shared with him why some of the words in Mrs Potter’s Lullaby especially resonated with me as well as my kids discovery of Counting Crows and their cover of Friend of a Devil.

Adam shared with me that Counting Crows would soon be releasing a new live album and that he and the rest of the band had two recording sessions scheduled for 2006 where they will be recording a new album to be released in about a year. Adam also mentioned that they will be on tour this summer with the band that played Fall 2004 VON, the Goo Goo Dolls.

While we were talking, we also got onto the discussion of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the fact that Adam doesn’t feel that Counting Crows will ever be voted into the Rock Hall due to the tremendous success of their first commercial album, August and Everything After. Adam did recall the fact that he was invited to play the Rock Hall Induction Ceremony back in 1993 because Van Morrison couldn’t make it. As a patron of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum, and as a passionate fan of Counting Crows, I for one, would like to believe that Adam was wrong.

After spending time with the band, I had the pleasure of: introducing the band, standing literally in the front of the stage, really enjoying their performance and at the end, joining Counting Crows and Farrell onstage for a performance of Mustang Sally. It turned that that over 2,000 people joined us last Thursday night at the San Jose Civic Auditorium for the concert. After the concert, I hosted my own Counting Crows “After Party” at Agenda and was joined by 500+ people for a night of post-concert dancing and fun. It was cool seeing at least one member of Counting Crows also take in the after party.

While I’m pretty sure just about everyone who went to the concert enjoyed themselves, it was the blog posting of one of our guests, Sarah Mcauley that resonated the most with me.

To all you hardcore C.C. fans out there (of which I am definitely one), I wanted to share some info on my latest novel AMBITION (Authorhouse, 2007). It is a political novel (sort of) about three childhood friends (non-pols) who launch a bid for the presidency in 2008. It is chock full of Counting Crows references including about a page describing the special kinship that the main character (a computer company CEO who ends up running for prez) feels with Adam Duritz.
