Kinnernet 2006 - Day 1:

Earlier this week, when asked why I was leaving for Israel, I told a number of people I was going to Israel to be part of a “Geek Camp.” Having now been a part of the Kinnernet 2006 community for the past day, calling this a “Geek Camp” doesn’t do much to really explain the experience that the other “campers” have all experienced. The genius behind Kinneret 2006 is Yossi Vardi and the eclectic group of people whom he calls “friend.” Personally I’m honored to be here and take in the experience. I’m told there are 150 people at Kinneret this year, of which 40+ of us are from outside of Israel. Tom Evslin is my “bunk mate” at camp this year.

Kinneret 2006 is all about “bottom up” community, “bottom up” content and offers the people who make up the community the opportunity for “extreme social networking” in a non-virtual sense and in the end provides an opportunity for ideas to be exchanged, friends to meet, friends to socialize and an opportunity to learn something new, get inspired and in the end leave with a new perspective on a wide range of topics.

Earlier today I had an opportunity to host a session on “Disruptive Communications: Communications without Boarders” and explored the future of Voice/IP, Radio/IP and especially TV/IP.

There are a number of elements in play here at Kinneret 2006 that others who are in the business of producing conferences and events can learn from. I hope to apply some of these leanings to future VON events. Ironically, for a group that includes many people who are major icons in the Israeli and worldwide Internet industries, we have had intermittent internet access so far during our stay. So instead of elaborating more about what Kinneret 2006 is all about, I’m going to take advantage of my current connectivity to post the following pictures that I took during the past day:
