Guest Blogger: Ian Pulver - "Looking for the Best Burger Places in the World"

One of my many new goals is to eat at the best "burger" places in the world.

In a recent GQ magazine there was a listing of the best burgers in America.

Le Tub--located in Hollywood Florida was rated #1 so we packed up the car and came down to South Flordia to eat a Le Tub burger. Le Tub located on A1A, aka Collins Avenue, is essentially an old decrepit bar built "along side" or some would say "built into" the intercoastal waterway. If you are looking for fast service and nice décor don't go to Le Tub. They pride themselves on a small grill, slow service, great burgers and cold Corona's. When we arrived, Le Tub, was not full. We sat down and the waitress warned us it would be at least a 60 minute wait for the burgers. I quickly responded by saying "we're outta of here" but when I regained my senses and realized we had nowhere to go we regrouped and committed for the long haul. After all the only reason we were in South Florida was for Le Tub. We placed our order and I held down the fort. Corinne took the kids for a walk and before we knew it the BURGERS arrived. Imagine eating a filet mignon on a bun. Joeley went plain burger with ketchup, I went cheese burger with ketchup with a touch of mustard. The burgers were crispy on the outside and pink on the inside. It was a tasty experience. Fries were good. We created a new Pulver method for placing ketchup on the fries. The kids were pretty excited. The sunset was spectacular. After we paid our bill in cash (they don't take Visa) we made our way out through a maze of old toilets and sinks. In Pulver fashion the "kids" entertained themselves while at the same time prepared for the long road on to our next burger experience. I would recommended the Le Tub experience if you have all the time in the world with no place to go.

I hate to burst your bubble but you haven't yet
enjoyed the World's Greatest Cheese Burger until
you have had the Goody Goody Cheese Burger at a
place in Asheville NC just down the road from the
Biltmore House & Gardens, the place is known as
Kutchie's Key West-Kutcharitaville Cafe. The staff
there informed me that people like Captain Tony,
Yankee Jack, John Wayne, Bob Dillon, Mural Hemingway. Jack Nickleson, Jimmy Buffett, the Monk,
Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmmer,and even Bob Hope just
to name a few. All those photos and more are on the walls. How cool is that, all those famous
people eating a Goody Goody Cheese Burger at
Kutchie's Key West. I was told the place has been
there since 1976. WOW!! Now that's a lot of
cheese burgers. Must be called the $MILLON DOLLAR
CHEESE BURGE...$$$$$
We came all the way from Calf. just to find this
Jewel of a destination. Try it, you'll go crazy
like us. Wow, what a Vacation.

If you ever plan on coming to Canada, go to Calgary, Alberta. There is a place called Peters Drive-In. It has the best burgers in the world. You should definitely go there some day.

Hey man, I just stumbled upon your site, but wanted to let you know about the best tasting burgers you are missing out on. They are both located in Akron, Ohio. They have been around since the late 60s, and Forbes actually named one, Swensons, the best Burger in America. Right down the street is Skyways. I believe they are better. But if you are looking for the best, that is where you have to go. I live in Washington, DC and head up there for a weekend to see relatives, and have to get at least 10 from each place and freeze them for the ride back, they are that good. Check them out.

I wracked my brain trying to decide on which of Austin's burgers deserved your consideration, Jeff & Ian (the city most definitely does warrant a look, should you be considering another Burger-Target roadtrip), and I got it down to two must-eats...

(In no particular order)

1. Hut's Hamburgers (http://hutshamburgers.citysearch.com/)

Every menu choice is a winner, but if the first time at Hut's you fail to order a Buffalo Burger...well, then you just ain't serious!


A. Dan's/Fran's

A local chain and a bit of a story...these outstanding burger joints -- known for their cheeseburgers cheeseburgers CHEESEBURGERS, and their terrific breakfasts...and their shakes -- used to all be "Dan's", but then Dan and Fran split up, and...well now there are "Dan's" and there are "Fran's", and it doesn't make a lick of difference what the sign says when you opt to eat at either. Best described as the kind of place that once it enters your mind simply won't let go until you have satisfied the resulting craving (and as I now live about as far from Austin as a person possibly can, I now have a real problem...)


And there are other burger joints in A-Town that deserve Honorable Mention here as well, including: BurgerTex, Arkie's Grill, Airport Haven, Casino el Camino, Dirty's, Hill-bert's, Hill's Cafe, and Nau's Enfield Drug (an old lunch counter at the back of an old drugstore that is...well, authentic enough to be sublime).

Man, now I am hungry! If you guys do decide to head down Austin way to check out the burger scene, please let me know...I can point you to the best Mexican food (NOT tex-mex) to be had in the continental 48!
