The Marlins are NOT the Pirates. Mets lose 7-3 to Marlins.
By winning 3 out of 4 games from the Pirates, the Mets had appeared to have recovered from the funk they fell into after being swept on the road by the Red Sox (going 0-3) and then losing 2 of 3 games to the Yankees. All bets of the state of the Mets psyche are now off as the Mets lost to the Marlins, 7 to 3.
Tomorrow afternoon the spotlight will be on the new additions to the Mets pitching staff as the Mets will be playing a double header against the Marlins. In the first game, John Maine who looked great against the Pirates until he melted in the heat of the New York Summer will have a chance to show to Mets management why he should stay in the rotation after the All Star break. In the second game, Michael Pelfrey will be making his big-league debut with his only “professional” experience coming from playing in Class A with the St. Lucie Mets and in Double-A with the Binghamton Mets. His minor league record is 6-3 with an ERA of 2.45 from pitching just 88 1/3 innings. Hopefully Pelfrey will provide some much needed depth to the Mets pitching staff and will be able to keep the Mets in the game long enough that the Mets bullpen will not be called on until the 8th or 9th inning of the game.
While it would be great to see the Mets take both ends of the double header, even splitting with the Marlins without going deep into the Mets bullpen would be considered a big win in my book. On the bright side, the Mets are still 12 ˝ games in front of the Phillies and the Marlins, sitting in first place in the National League East.
