Looking for GOVERNMENT 2.0: Government should ALSO learn from Car Dealerships

Based on the feedback I've received so far, it seems yesterday's blog on communication-enabling Hospital Waiting Rooms resonated with quite a few of my friends out there. Now, let's hope it trickles over to Hospital CIOs and administrators.

In a similar vein, let's hope that government might learn from the success of the car dealership.

In recent months, I have even noticed that the US Senate (hardly the bastion for forward-looking communications policy, as recent events verify), has installed an open Wi-Fi network, for use during interminable hearings. The US House of Representatives, however, has yet to install a Wi-Fi network. And then, there are still the courtrooms, mired in 18th Century tradition, rules, and codes of conduct.

US Courtrooms still compel everyone to turn off all electronic devices. Jonathan Askin will be stuck at a "Tunney Act" Hearing (on the antitrust implications of the SBC/AT&T and Verizon/MCI mergers) at the US District Court for several hours today with NO means of communicating with the outside world. I wouldn't wish this (both having to sit through such a hearing but also having to do so without Internet access) on my worst, modern enemy, let alone my friend and consigliere. The Hearing itself might well have very profound consequences on the future of communications and competition in the United States. It would have been nice to get a play-by-play, or at least to allow Jonathan access to the outside world during what will likely be an insufferably arcane discussion of the intricacies of antitrust law and its place in ensuring a competitive communications landscape.

Wouldn't the citizens be better served by more open government through immediate communications with the outside world (albeit, without the intrusive voice component)? Isn't this a step in the right direction for open government enabled by mobile communications and the Internet?
