A PR Person’s Guide to Video at Fall VON and Video on the Net

During the past month, I have been approached by an increasing number of PR professionals who continue to pitch their clients to speak at Fall 2006 VON Conference and Video on the Net. They approached me regarding VON because they “heard” that “Video” was a core topic that was being covered and they felt that their clients’ products/services/vision was a great fit for the conference. And they approached me about Video on the Net since they just assumed that we would be covering personal Video Communications and Desktop Video conferencing.

Just to clarify, the “Video” content that will be present at the Fall 2006 VON Conference is IPTV, MobileTV with some IMS. When developing the VON Conference schedule, within pulvermedia, I defined “IPTV” as the technology platform being pitched to the Telcos to roll out CableCo like services. Our core audiences are the Telcos, content owners and the equipment vendors who are selling into this ecosystem. In a similar way, for our own internal definitional purposes, “MobileTV” is the technology being pitched to Wireless Service providers to deliver CableCo like content to cellular subscribers. This philosophy is reflected in Telephony’s IPTV Summit and in a number of breakout sessions throughout Fall VON.

At Video on the Net we are NOT looking at IPTV. Rather, at Video on the Net we will be taking a hard look at the effects of the broadband internet on the movie, TV and broadcast industries. My goal is to bring together people who are helping to define the space and those that are being disrupted today as well those who we believe will be the disruptors of tomorrow. We will be exploring the effects of “TV as an Application.” One of the emerging topics of the event will be the discussion of “Long Tail TV.” I look forward to welcoming the internet strategists and the executives of media companies to this inaugural event.

To the PR Community, please feel free to continue to pitch your clients as IPTV will continue to be a core focus at our future VON events and I’m already working on the outline sketch for our second Video on the Net event that will be taking place in Spring ’07. And while most of our sessions at our September 2006 events are already full, due to the inevitable last-minute speaking cancellations, there may be a spot for your client at our September events.
