VON was Rocketboomed!

Last week I enjoyed spending time with Steve Garfield who amongst other things is the Boston reporter for Rocketboom. Steve's report from of Fall 2006 VON / Video on the Net can be seen in yesterday's edition of Rocketboom.

Steve G pointed out your site to me the other day and I've been flipping through it. Love that you keep a rating of the top ten internet only shows... in fact I think I'm going to reblog that. It's the only place I've seen a good top ten list of this sort.

What most interests me is because it illustrates that you get it. RSS syndicated video is a huge new market... and it's about more than simply so called "clip culture". It's a diverse range that goes from being as simple as sharing raw clips with family members the way one might share photos on flickr... to mass entertainment and news.

It is simultaneously both communications and episodic entertainment.

As I like to put it on it's most basic level it's personal communications that just so happen to be public.

BTW... a couple of my favorite videoblogs that you might find interesting.

TedTalks -- Chances are you've already watched every episode... if not you should.

National Geographic -- This has to be the highest production quality video podcast I've seen. Episodes are 6-8 minutes and have a decent amount of depth. In short it's just as magical a window into world cultures as the day I first picked up a national geographic magazine... it proves to me the same magic can come across in this new medium.

Alternatively there are some HORRID PBS video podcasts such a some "texas ranch hand" video podcast... that are little more than repiticious two minute advertisments that have not a single redeeming value and show now understanding of what video podcasting is all about. To see National Geographic "get it" almost single handedly restored my faith and hope that one day all big media entities might get it as well.

So... right now what I'm most interested in is the next gen of portable hardware. I call it "hubless media agregation" as a counterpoint to apple's "digital hub" strategy. Also known as "direct to device" media aggregation. As an example the sony PSP is getting there but does not auto aggregate. These next gen devices will aggregate audio and then video directly to the device over wifi networks seemlessly jumping on and offline as they find open or trusted wifi connections. Of course there's some argument over wether these devices will use wifi or wireless... but that's beside the point as far as I'm concerned.

Nokia with it's n91/92 and some others are VERY close and we at mefeedia.com have been ready for over a year with simple technology and standards that will allow us to plugin to the first platform that comes along. We already work with iTunes, the PSP, the iPod and pretty much every software and hardware based aggregator.

Once we get beyond the desktop to portable devices and set top boxes the whole sector could explode... but it's a tenuous existence right now until those first devices come out and the model is proven. For one thing people like Tivo and cellular carriers and hardware makers are used to and would like to continue to have complete control which is severely limiting innovation.

What I was hoping is if I might exchange an email or IM or better yet me might be able to talk on the phone about the general topic of where this is going.
