An interesting comment, but it does not address the modern reality. In current conditions, the small inventor needs education and assistance in developing, patenting and marketing their product.

While people love open source, GPLed programs, if you don't patent it if you can, someone else will take your idea and write their own version or clone your device in Korea or Tiawan and leave you out in the cold.

Without some sort of protection, investors will not invest in you. Silicon Valley has built the infrastructure to work with startups and independent inventors. Most other places, Israel included has not.
