Now even FREE Phone Calls has Competition. Introducing futurephone.com

futurephone.com is offering free phone calls to over 50 countries: (ARGENTINA, AUSTRALIA, AUSTRIA, BANGLADESH, BELGIUM, BRAZIL, BULGARIA, CANADA, CHILE, CHINA, CHRISTMAS ISLAND, COCOS ISLANDS, COLOMBIA, CYPRUS, CZECH REPUBLIC, DENMARK, ESTONIA, FINLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, GREECE, GUAM, HONG KONG, HUNGARY, ICELAND, IRELAND, ISRAEL, ITALY, JAPAN, LUXEMBOURG, MALAYSIA, MEXICO, MONACO, NETHERLANDS, NEW ZEALAND, NORWAY, PANAMA, PERU, POLAND, PORTUGAL, PUERTO RICO, RUSSIA, SAN MARINO, SINGAPORE, SOUTH KOREA, SPAIN, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND, TAIWAN, THAILAND, TURKEY, UNITED KINGDOM, US VIRGIN ISLANDS, VENEZUELA)

No special software needed. Just a working telephone.

Just dial +1.712.858.8883, When the gateway answers, enter 011 then the country code and the number you want to reach (mobile users, do not hit SEND - the call will go through on it's own). For Canada dial 1 plus the area code and number.

We are living in some pretty interesting times. Now even "free" has competition.

Please, I just test your free call and it's working well. I thank you for your free solution.

Now I would like to ask you why you never include in your free list some africans countries.
The international calls are very expensive in these african countries. It will nice for you to help us to do free calls.

Please, can you include in your free list Rwanda, Senegal and Togo?

Sincerely,

Thanks and Best Regards.

Francis.

Trixbox or FreePBX can be set up to place calls through Futurephone (though as another commenter said, touch tone digits sent after the connection to the called party has been made will not pass through) - see the page at http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Routing+calls+using+a+free+international+calling+service for setup instructions.

That page also mentions a couple of similar, competing services (all based in Iowa) that offer free calls to a more limited selection of countries.

This company makes their money off origination fees from people calling that 712 number from out of state. Companies like this based out of Iowa get much higher origination fees than if they were in another state. So then they choose destinations that cost less to terminate to than the origination fees they're making off the call.

If it was about brand recognition I think they would have a much nicer web site! ;)

Also, I'm not sure if this is by the same company, because they have a 712 number in a different exchange, but it offers the same type of service. http://freecallstochina.com

It's all about Brand Recognizition, or see How the youtube's or skype's ever made money?

I don't understand the business model either but not a bad idea if you want to load test your system with real world data and/or build a list of ANIs/CLIDs to solicit to in the future.

P.S. I notice the service doesn't permit DTMF digits to pass through to the far end -- I guess you get what you pay for.

Very cool. I'll be sure to feature on my free stuff segment.

One burning question remains...

How the heck do they make enough money to keep the lights on?
