When 7.23 PM is an Approximate Time:

Last night after arriving from Boston on the Delta Shuttle, the passengers on the plane heard the familiar message: “Welcome to New York. The approximate time is 7.23 PM”

So how exactly is 7.23 PM an approximate time? And why do they announce the time? It isn’t like we have a time difference between Boston and New York…and even if someone like myself wasn’t wearing a watch, we would know the time the moment we turned on our cell phones.

Hi Jeff,

Good point. In addition to cell phones, many watches can now synchronize themselves automatically with official national time clocks. I received such a watch as a gift a few montns ago. It was pretty amazing to be able to make a couple of clicks and then have the watch set itself to the proper time.
