Verizon vs. Vonage: pulvermedia Webinar - Thursday March 15th

On Thursday March 15th at 1 PM EDT pulvermedia is having a special webinar to discuss the recent court decision about VoIP. This discussion will provide the backdrop for the pending injunction hearing. Who stands to benefit and what happens next for the VoIP industry. The discussion that will last about 40 minutes will discuss the following topics:

What is the scope of the patents at issue and what was decided?

What is the impact if any on other VoIP providers?

Okay this is complete bull sh*t ... Vonage is charging almost $150 to disconnect from their service. Can you freakin' believe that garbage? Is this how Vonage is padding their revenues charging people to remove the service?!? I'm sorry, but this is not just bad service and stupid but bordering on a mugging. "Gee, I'm sorry the service is crappy. You want to leave? Fine, cough up $150 and we'll set you free." Add to that the reconnect fee from Telus (a CRTC mandated thing) ... ouch this was a very, very expensive experiment. Given this little experience ... don't bother with Vonage. Forget the catchy jingle. Forget thinking you're going to save money. Just forget it.

I really tried and Lorraine has put up with a lot, but I've finally decided to drop Vonage like a hot potato and I'm back to Telus. I called Telus today and my new line and number is already active (e-mail me if you'd like the new number). I just got off the phone with Vonage (the line is now deadsky) and I'm trying to get refunds for this month and last. I'm not holding out much hope, but you have to ask right?

Now for the why. I wasn't able to have consistently good quality calls. I tried to put up with it and thought it might just be network congestion. But this week and last I've had to be on the phone with tech support people a bunch and had to do most of it on my cell. Not good. It's not a good sign when the cell call sounds better! Yes, I tried tweaking my router. Yes, I had my line checked. But hey, I'm online all the time. I just a lot of bandwidth day to day. It's rather annoying to have to shutdown download just to answer the phone ... and it still suck.

So if you're interested in Vonage ... really look at how much you use the tringotel. Test your connection and see if you consistently push more than 500Kb up stream. And do take advantage of the 30 day cancellation ... I wish I had.
