Living the Broadband Lifestyle in Stockholm.

Earlier tonight I went out to dinner with most of the people who will be speaking at Innovation Technology 2007. During dinner, I did a quick informal survey about broadband connectivity in people’s homes in Stockholm and I was amazed at what I learned.

I felt comfortable doing the survey since I just had Verizon FiOS installed in my home in the States, and I thought for sure that my broadband connectivity was going to be close to being on-par with the people whom I was having dinner with.

Well, according to my survey, in April, 2007, the “normal” connectivity that most people living in the city of Stockholm have is 24 MB down / 8 MB up. And this costs about 35 Euro a month. People living in some of the newer apartments in Stockholm have access to 100 MB of connectivity and people living in the suburbs have 8MB down / 3MB up. And there was talk about rumors that up to 1 gig of connectivity will be available to some people in the near future.

It turns out that the connectivity that I’m experiencing at home is closer to the 8MB down / 3MB and I’m paying US$ 49.95 /month for my connectivity.

I wonder how many years US residents are going to have to wait until they get to experience 24MB down / 8 MB up of connectivity as the norm.

If I use Speakeasy's speedtest and use their DC server (since I'm in VA), I always get a measured ~31000 kpbs down and ~4500 kpbs up for my $55.95 / month.

It's interesting to talk about what's comparable. To some people (like me and you), upload is important. Others don't really care about upload, and might think that your 15 Mbps down/ 2 Mbps up is significantly faster than the 8/2 in the Swedish suburbs. (And of course some others don't care so long as it's broadband, and some really crazy people stick with dialup when they could get broadband.)

Here's an interesting report - the latest OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) data on top broadband penetration countries can be found here:

And you wonder why ThePirateBay.com was developed in Sweden?

I'm not sure how much of a factor broadband for leading to new content media, their are still some social barriers. Most of the new media content is copied after what happens in the valley.

Remember, Sweden is 9 million people and a social state, so resources are accessible to provide these types of services.

Most Swedish countys offer Fibre to the home access for some 25 Euro per month.
Personally, living in Sollentuna 5 miles north of Stockholm I have 100 MB fiber access for 21 Euro per month. :)

As I type this on the most complicated wireless/dial-up set up most people have seen I still stand by my point that they should STOP making broadband faster and concentrate on GETTING broadband everywhere. I'm only 10min from a major city in South Western Ontario, it's not like I'm completely in the middle of nowhere there's at couple hundred people here, is it too much to ask?

I have 30 MB down / 5 MB up with FIOS for $54.95 / month, for what it's worth.

And don't forget that 35 Euro is about $48 anyway (foreign exchange rates, PPP may vary), so you're paying comparable amounts.

I get close to those speeds depending on when I use my FIOS. Will be interesting to see if Europe takes the lead in the creation of new media content just by virtue of having access to that much bandwidth. Also guess that means that PodCamp Europe will be entirely on UStream, since bandwidth clearly isn't an obstacle!
