Question of the Day: What kind of broadband service do you have at home and are you thinking of changing it - if so, why?

Earlier this year I felt the need to improve the connectivity in my home and recently switched over to Verizon FiOS and have I haven’t looked back.

Which leads me to today's Question of the Day: What kind of broadband service do you have at home and are you thinking of changing it - if so, why?

(If you have a suggestion for a future question of the day, please drop me a line.)

A guy is walking past a big wooden fence at the insane asylum and he hears all the residents inside chanting, Thirteen! Thirteen! Thirteen!
Quite curious about this, he finds a hole in the fence, and looks in. Someone inside pokes him in the eye.
Then everyone inside the asylum starts chanting, Fourteen! Fourteen! Fourteen!

I called Verizon FIOS to order phone, internet, and cable prior to my move in. My Consumer Order Summary was dated 3-28-08, and the scheduled installation date was 4-7-08. I reviewed the e-mail and all looked well. I move into my new house and install date comes. They setup an 8 AM-noon window. I already had the Optical Network Terminal unit (ONT) in my house, so I figured this would be cake for them. I am a Sys Admin at an ISP, so the internet stuff I could do myself with ease.

On install day, no one showed, no one called. I had my mobile with me at ALL times. So around 1:30 PM I called Verizon to see what was going on. If something came up, I had a week off to move in and if they needed to come by in a day or two, I was totally cool with that. After about an hour on hold I got in touch with a “state level” dispatcher. That said that there were “no facilities available for my order” and I was called. Nope, I wasn’t called; they did have my cell (which I had with me all of the time) in their records. I wanted them to come out later in the week if possible since I was home. They said that their next available time for me was 4-12-08, which was a day where I was going to a wedding. The next available time after that was at the end of the month, on a work day for me.

Basically because they did not show up, or even notify me with a reason, they put me at the back of the line. I was trying to escalate my request and the support only gave me unreasonable dates and that “no facilities available for my order” BS. I later wanted to get my copper line put back so I could at least get phone service, and after a long wait in hold they gave me the end of the month as a date. Basically I was being run around in circles and being shoved to the end of the line because Verizon screwed up my installation. I was told the only way I could get it sooner is if I “knew an installer who’d do me a favor,” and I was pretty much screwed with the window of time I had to get the service installed. The salesperson fed me a load of bull and the installer didn’t even call me with a reason. I tried to figure out what “no facilities available for my order” meant, and why this was such a problem since I already had the ONT in my house. Half of their work was already done.

The same day, I called a local cable company who installed my phone, internet, and cable the next day. They showed up on time and did the normal pre and post appointment verification. I unplugged the ONT in my house and let the battery go out. Verizon gave me such a lousy customer experience I swore I would never do business with them, and be sure to let other people know about their awful customer service and commitments they setup and do not honor. Verizon screwed up prior when they bought Bell Atlantic, and screwed up our perfectly find DSL service I had around 98/99. My money is going to a competitor, and Verizon won’t see it because they have abysmal customer service. I am certainly interested in fiber optic lines connected to my house, but so long as Verizon is the only provider, I will happily do without.

I did a lot of research before deciding on a provider for my residential t1 line. I'm a stability freak, and I'm satisifed with my service. But before I changed providers twice because of service issues and stability.

I currently am on a cable connection running 7.5 mbps down and 512k up. I want to upgrade to 12mbs down and 1mbps up. More for the upload than anything. It's only $15 more a month. Still debating it.

Posted by: Clintus McGintus at May 23, 2007 03:31 AM

Princeton NJ choices are: Comcast DSL and Verizon. Just switched from Verizon to Comcast which is faster so far.... awaiting FIOS.
In my NYC apt, I just switched from Verizon to RCN as it is faster and to date, more reliable. I also have RCN cable, which is cheaper than TWC, the other choice in the city.

I live in central jersey and Fios arrived here about 8 months ago. I'm taking the "wait and see" route. Is there anyone who has the whole package (Land line, computer,tv)and if so how's it going.Would love to hear from everybody possible.
Even comments on the individual pieces would make an old dogs life less confusing. :-)

Here in Missouri, USA, people have but 3 choices.
Dial-up, DSL, or Cable. I have Cable provided by Comcast - lately it's been pretty good, but there are times when it seems slow. Perhaps I should not be running an open wireless router...;-)

We've been running Yahoo SBC DSL for several years now and they're great. They have good customer service and will replace your router if it's broken or if it's just old.

Verizon FIOS, 30Mbps down/ 5Mbps up ($55/month). Had very few problems. None as far as the Internet connection being up. None as far as TV service over their boxes. One of the CableCards in the HD TiVo started out flaky. The router has an impressive mess of port forwarding options, but is a bit overwhelming to configure. Leads to not playing nice with my housemate's Wii and XBox360.

Verizon FIOS.

I moved (to no longer be a stone's trow from the CO) and therefore also moved from my T1 to copper ADSL back in 1999 and greatly missed the commit time for problems. But...when I moved again last year (to Dallas) FIOS was available and it has been absolutely problem-free.

[Though I do miss having the ISP that would cheaply give from a /28 up to /25 if needed and even properly delegate reverse DNS ala RFC2317.]

I'm on AT&T U-verse.

I've had AT&T broadband and formerly had TimeWarner cable, but moved to AT&T's IPTV service. We have IPTV in HD over IP. It works.

I currently have Earthlink's Home phone +DSL service in my Home Office and like it very much. The speed is usually close to 1Mb or over and the congestion is minimum. If I get into more network and web heavy applications, I would upgrade to their 8Mb service which is only an extra $5 a month.

Most of my colleagues who have Verizon find Verizon's congestion a big problem, but luckily Earthlink's service is well managed and I do not have these problems.

If you are looking at only getting one bill then Earthlink's Home phone DSL, powered by Covad, is the way to go. It replaced my local service from Verizon and my long distance service from Sprint.

I recently upgraded to 3M down/280K up with the cable company here in Israel (Hot) plus Bezeq International as my Internet provider. Works great (knock on wood :) ).

I have TWC RoadRunner service, 8M down/512k up - its the fastest that I can get where I live. There were hints of FIOS availability (new subdivision, new wiring and served by Verizon), but they installed copper instead - get this LAST YEAR! Upscale subdivision in which I'm sure 90% of all homes would like subscribe to at least one service, and many that would go across the board. This is what I have with TWC - VoIP, 3 dual tuner HD DVRs and the fastest residential internet service they'll sell me.

i have verizon dsl in my apartment in midtown nyc and it sucks big time - terrible upload slow as a snail - its a sham - plus when i installed it with their verizon install dsl cd it crashed my main desktop so that i have to re-install everything - bad news - the computer is sitting idle - anyway i chose ver-oooh-zon because i didn't want to have another bill to think of otherwise i would have gone to cable and i don't watch tv so i don't need cable - tired of the gate keepers always thinking we are the enemy and how to make as much money by giving the least value and forget service - we buy a product and getting serivce these days is a process of wearing you down and out - this sucks - and i ain't gonna take it no more!! - the gate keepers - government, corporations, media, triumvirate mind set is let them eat grass - which only back fires in the end as marie antoinette learned - in jeffs talk in stockholm last month he was so proud of his fios connection - until he found out he was beyond the times - way behind - the USA is like 16 or 17 down the list of broadband world wide- why? why are we so backwards and slow and the world so far advanced in broadband - ask the gatekeepers who hold us back in the name of protecting who? - so the question is who protects us from those who say they are protecting us - go METS go jeff -

I carry my 1 Meg connectivity in my laptop throughout Ireland, powered by O2-Ireland and get about the same speed from my wired Eircom connection at home.

Let's talk about issues outside of the big cities. I happen to be in a tiny town, so I got unified tv, phone, and broadband on one connection, over copper. Other options in the area are radio frequency through the local bank, DSL or cable if you live in the nearby town of 5000, or satellite service.

Those of us living far from big metros have different and more limited choices. Pity the folks living too far outside of city limits around here. No wired broadband whatsoever.

I have Verizon FIOS and absolutely LOVE it. It's fantastic. I can't wait to see what Stockholm is like, since you blogged about the bandwidth there.

I have broadband through my cable company, RCN. I will admit that since I no longer have a landline I will probably have to stick with this type of connection. Even though DSL is cheaper. I am happy with it so far.

I have Verizon DSL at our NY apt., which works well. I spoke to a Verizon DSL installer technician recently in our neighborhood, and asked him when FIOS would be in this neighborhood, Park Slope.

He said it was a matter of the Verizon lawyers getting permission to enter the backyards here. Rows of brownstones and entitled backyard owners here ...

A call to Verizon's FIOS number put me on the announce list for when FIOS will be available here.

Verizon FIOS. Rocks. Most of the time :)

I currently have Time Warner Cable at home, but really only because its the best speed for the price available in my area.

Last year they started rolling out FIOS on the west side of Rochester, :( I live on the east side. When it becomes available to me I will switch in a heart beat, I will also probably drop my regular tv cable connection too in favor of some for of RSS/IPTV connection.

I've been using a local WISP http://www.mesanetworks.net ever since we moved here (5+ yrs). They've been great to work with, super responsive, almost no downtime, static ip's, etc.

They're one of my key components in my long-term "don't support monopolists" policy here at home :)

I've referred tons of friends, neighbors and businesses to them over the years, which is about as high praise from me as you can get.
