Question of the Day: Which social Network(s) Do you Actively participate in and why?
Today’s Question of the Day: Which social Network(s) Do you Actively participate in and why?
For myself, I look to my early usage of the CB channels on CompuServe as my first exposure to "social" computer networking. And after CompuServe, it was on IRC back in the early 90s where my social on-line experiences continued. After all, after watching the latest episode of X-Files, where did someone go other than to #x-files for a real-time social experience to discuss the show, the plots and the storyline behind the storyline?
After being addicted to IRC, I eventually became hooked on IM and was an early user of ICQ. And yes, my buddylist on ICQ represented a social network of sorts. Over time as I became active on various IM platforms, my active buddy list was always a reflection of the social network that I was keeping.
These days I have mostly moved away from using traditional IM networks and I am back to using email and SMS as my by default method of doing quick messages mixed in with some twitters.
So in terms of what is known today as “Social Networks”, I look to LinkedIn and to a lesser extent Facebook for business networking and I recently caught up with a few friends and acquaintances who travel over on dopplr. Oh, and I use flickr for photo sharing. And I recently joined MyBlogLog to see some of the people who visit this blog.
What about you?

I like Linkedin but prefer facebook.
Posted by: fred333 at February 20, 2008 04:15 PM
Twitter, Jaiku, and Facebook at the moment. Because I have met and connected with many people I never would have otherwise. Also hoping maybe to find new opportunities this way. Also using Flickr and just starting to tap into social networking aspects there which I think is pretty cool.
I was going to say Second Life doesn't count as a social network, but that's a lie. So yes, I do that too. For all the reasons I already mentioned. Plus, it's fun.

whatever Chris Brogan endorses, I do.
but really, he tried to get me on Twitter a while ago and I didn't see the value, but now I do, I can announce new gardenfork.tv episodes as well as keep in touch with many friends in a casual short message way.
I also use LinkedIn for business, ( LinkedIn: Eric Rochow ) . its a good way to keep track of clients when they move to new companies, and find connections with people you had not thought of.

I'm actively using LinkedIn, Plaxo, Twitku ('cause I can't choose between Twitter & Jaiku), and MSN IM.
I'm on MyBlogLog, Flickr, YouTube, Ning, upComing and MySpace but am not really 'using' them.

I forgot to mention eSnips which gives you 5gb disk space which you can share or not with whoever along with widgets and embeding options.
Multiply (which I mentioned earlier) has (by the way) no limit on the amount of media you upload. You can blog, share photos, music and videos as you please!

Hi Jeff,
Like you, I started with BBS's and later , IRC, ICQ and other IMs. I now use MSNIM only with real contacts and not for any virtual relations.
As to social networks:
I am on MySpace just for the sake of being there as it seems a musician has to these days...
I am on Multiply for personal uses (though my music is posted there too), and I found it to be a great social network through which I made some awesome friendships (though virtual mostly) and been introduced to lots of music and other media.
I use Picasa for my photos though I also have a Flickr account (but the storage is so limited there if using the free option) and of course I use YouTube for my videos.
I am also on Orkut...but mostly because I am involved with the Brazilian community in Tel-Aviv...
And lastly, and perhaps the most fascinating, I am a part of an Israeli social netword called Beshutaf (joining is by invitation only) which is the first and only community I know which actually works to create a real-life community. We have meetings, new friendships and new bands coming out of this one, and i know many members who would claim it has changed their lives!
Cheers,
Sharon

LinkedIn, Nature Network (for science types) are the main professional networking tools
del.icio.us is one where my network really adds value
I use Twitter a lot and it has certainly been good for making a few new contacts.
Flickr and Vox are ysed more in a "keep up with friends and family" sense.
I have a Facebook account, but that's about it, since I haven't really used it yet. MySpace is an eyesore.

It is MySpace for MyMobiSafe.com, or that's display name "MyMobiSafe" to all our MySpacers out there. MySpace has everything from friends, classifieds, chat, and now we will get news too!
MyMobiSafe.com votes MySpace all the way!
MyMobiSafe.com is the new antivirus software for all cell phone users. Protect your cell for just $3.99 per month.

Just blogs over here. Reading, writing, commenting, and trackbacking provide enough community to keep me occupied 24/7.

My favorite is Flickr. I'm trying out ning.com. I used LinkedIN, but still haven't figured it all out yet.
And Twitter is probably my current superstar product. It's responsible for some of my recent blogging success.

Actively using LinkedIn, Plaxo, Twitter and MSN. Got users on many other main networks. But struggle a bit with the fact that for instance Facebook is nowhere close to being as big in Europe as in the US.
Posted by: Daniel Glifberg at May 23, 2007 02:02 PM
I have used Linked-in for almost 3 years, Plaxo before that (it is sort of a social network system turned virus), MyBlogLog a little, Twitter, and Jaiku. I blog through Vox which has its own social aspect. I have also got Ning - for experimentation of my own. Of course, I have also got the Web1.0 stuff like ICQ (defunct), MSN IM(active), Yahoo IM (active), AIM (semi-active). In my past I have also used MSN (the actual service when it was not Internet) and Compuserve. Still remember my defunct number 100256,3400.
What is next though?

I use IM quite a bit with a few close friends. I idle on IRC. I loathe MySpace (even though I was quoted as a MySpace "devotee" in an AP article) but I use it because lots of friends are there. I've yet to look into LinkedIn. Hands down, Facebook is the best designed and implemented social network site I've used. It helps that I work on a college campus and know a lot of college kids but now that it's open to everyone, I think it's the place to be.

I establish defensive brands on as many networks as practical once I see more than a few people show up. Today, that's Facebook, MySpace, Virb, LinkedIn, Xing, Flickr, Podshow, Wordpress.com, Twitter, Jaiku, and more. Defending your brand is essential.
Is there a VON and Pulver Media on each major network?

I don't use LinkedIn as much as I might, but I've had it for a while. I reg'd a livejournal my senior year of college, because I had many friends who had them. I got into Facebook (then "thefacebook") because it started at Harvard as an alternative to the college's (poorly designed) online facebook. Back in the day, I didn't even think of it as a social networking app. Then it exploded.
I'm on AIM and Gchat as much as possible, though I consider IM different from social networking.
I come from a branch of internet Geekery that regards MySpace as a dirty dirty place. I shun it and discourage people from using it for purposes outside of music promotion.

First online "social network" was probably BITNET Relay (a predecessor to IRC) and the forums at EcoNet/PeaceNet in the late 1980s, very early 1990s. Was a big IRC user for a while, which evolved into IM usage.
Today I still use IM a good bit, but in terms of "social networking" sites, I primarily use LinkedIn, Twitter and increasingly Facebook. Occasionally I use Flickr and SlideShare. I do have accounts on Xing, MySpace and probably have a dozen others (but not yet dopplr), but don't use them all that much.
Thanks for asking the question - fun to see the responses.

I actively participate in Twitter, Flickr, People's personal blogs even though I think I have an account on most major social networks. I sign up just so I will be able to keep my User ID in case I decide to use it.

I'm a long-term member of two private groups that spun off more public forums that are now defunct. I have LinkedIn and Facebook accounts. Honestly as mom of a college student Facebook makes me feel like I'm on his turf, so I prefer LinkedIn, but I haven't taken the time to really explore its usefulness. I use Flickr socially once in awhile, but it's more a display space for me. I'm most active in Twitter at the moment, it works very well for meeting folks who I then interact with other places such as blogs & email.

Linkedin and Xing for business, mybloglog for my blog. and now, as you know, dopplr

I only got involved in MySpace after a bunch of musician friends told me it'd make me rich, famous, and constantly on tour. After realizing they were full of shit, I pretty much stuck with the usual networks- Fellow blog readers, podcasters, Twitter, people I actually meet at coffee shops, and the CB when I'm on the road.

blogs (reading writing and commenting,) facebook, linkedin, plaxo, msn messenger, yahoo messenger, Googletalk, Jabber, IRC, ICQ, Twitter, Jaiku, SMS, email, Google and Yahoo Groups (as member and administrator,) Flickr, Picasaweb, - ummm... - couple of shared wikis, dev wikis, calendars and intranet forum boards - all on a pretty much regular basis i.e. daily. (Or at least several times a month for the wikis and forums.) And I'm 50 and pretty sure the younger of my colleagues are running rings around me in the social networking stakes.
Hi. I'm a sys admin and writer/publisher, and this is my life.

I too am addicted to IRC. You can find me on godzilla.cyanide-x.net on any number of channels. IRC is the coolest place to network even after all this time :).

First online social network (and I would love it if more people followed your example and answered this first)? Probably www.televisionwithoutpity.com, the first forum where the online people actively connected offline-- trading tapes, meetups, etc.
Now? LinkedIn for some years now, the more informal network of PR/Marketing bloggers and podcasters, and definitely a huge Twitter user-- and getting value from it.
Posted by: Doug Haslam at May 23, 2007 11:43 AM
LinkedIn is probably my main "networking" network. I do use AIM and MSN for IM with friends. Flickr for photo sharing. Twitter now for, uhh, twittering. The lines are starting to blur though.
Never did get into the Facebook or Myspace thing.
