Flavor of the Month: Personal Broadband Broadcasting Platforms
When I look at the state of "Disrupted Broadcasting" in 2007, one trend that has my attention is the growing number of startups which will offer everyone and anyone with the ability to have their own broadband broadcasting channel.
And the best part is that other than whatever you invest in your own production (maybe a studio, video mixer, lights, camera, wireless mics, green/blue screen, ...), for just the price of your own time, it is now possible to build on your own brand and use the platforms of sites like Ustream.TV and BlogTV and put yourself on Broadband TV. (look for other companies to announce themselves in the near future.)
And it is because of the advent of these platforms together with advent of pervasive broadband that everyday people will make an effort to create new shows since a major technology barrier has been removed. Ok, it is true that for years it has been possible for just about anyone in the United States who made an effort to have their own cable access show, but how many people besides the fictional characters Wayne and Garth from Wayne’s World ever really took advantage of that?
On the internet one has access to an immediate global viewing audience.
As the numbers of LIVE user generated channels continue to grow, many people will find it be very challenging to FIND and GROW an audience. But, I am confident some people will find their niche and “blow up” into something very BIG. This is bound to happen. We have already experienced this in the world of Internet TV where during the past year an on-line personality gets discovered and gets signed by a major television network. And this will happen again in 2007 and beyond.
By the way, it turns out having friends on twitter is a great way to announce a live broadcast. And as long as twitter continues to scale, I fully expect all of the personal broadband broadcasting platforms to integrate twitter as a broadcast announcement tool.
As someone who used CuSeeMe back in 1993, it has taken some time, maybe a lot of time, but the day of personal broadband broadcasting is here to stay.

I enjoyed reading this post. One thing that I'm interested to see is how many independent media makers are able to cross over to the mainstream. As the popularity of podcasting/vlogging continues to grow, it is inevitable that some of the more outstanding or popular content producers will be courted in some form or fashion by the major outlets. They say content is king...
Peace!

Jeff,
The folks here at Ustream totally agree with your assessment. Ustreaming is a great way to build your brand, whether you use us or BlogTV or another company.
The good news for consumers is that competition is going to drive rapid evolution and improvement in this field. I can't wait to see what this looks like in a year.
