Yesterday I got pulled over on the Information Superhighway…

…and I almost got the first ticket for doing a live video broadcast on the internet from my car!

Yesterday I decided to try to do another live mobile Internet TV broadcast from inside my car. My setup was pretty simple. All I had to do was turn on my EvDO service, put my laptop on my dashboard, log into BlogTV and start to drive. My friend Geo called my cell phone and provided the other half of the conversation for most of the drive time. Overall, things were going pretty well until a police officer noticed that my laptop was on my dashboard and I got pulled over for “obstructing the view of the driver.” Which in turn was the end of my broadcasting day.

When I got out of my car, the police officer just had a puzzled look on his face and could not figure out why anyone would be driving around with their laptop on their car’s dashboard. (I did not dare tell him what I was really doing.) While I ended up not getting a ticket, and only a warning, I now have the incentive to “Pimp my Ride” and create a not-so-obvious car-cam for the next time I want to do a live mobile Internet TV broadcast.

Jeff,

What about getting a USB webcam and glue that to the dashboard, then at least the cable will be long enough to keep your laptop on the passengers seat.

Happy mobile Blogtv'ing.

Hey Jeff,

Here in Texas, we can't drink beer, let alone keep our guns in our trucks any more.

However, I don't think there is a law that keeps us from doing live video broadcasting.

Great stuff!

yo jeff - you were supposed to keep this getting almost busted on the info superhighway a secret :-) i shot a little bit of the screen on my sony t-50 so i could blackmail you but alas you blew it and told the world - something that i learned so far and what was interesting is you can't read the chat and drive at the same time - so you need somebody to be a chatter bugger in addition to the call in guest too - so you need to have the phone on to hear what people are chatting about - that is something to think about - also the feed back loop and being on the phone has its trade off since i believe you need to film the blogtv screen event with the co-host or guest talking in addition to blog tv archive - because blogtv doesn't archive anything other then main window and your voice - so that means another computer just to capture it with audio - unless one of the video screen capture programs can do it - have to play with camestra or camistra or something like that - i have a copy somewhere -

also i am thinking that a usb camera to cell phone mini usb jack and or some broadband capable mobile device (not sure which one though) could be interesting
option that i am exploring - anybody have any suggestions - and also for driving - look my no hands - need to have some sort of camera and mic attached to the dashboard somehow - some way - without damaging the dashboard - gotta run to B&H to check on camera - geo your partner in crime

I wonder if this is the first time that the term "pimp my ride" is used in relation to adding a webcam with EvDO service, and not UV spots under the car :)

Would have loved to see that episode of Cops :).

How about a lipstick cam connected via USB cable (better yet- wireless?) and velcro'd to the roof above the rearview mirror? That way you can easily sneak peaks into the camera whenever you check the mirror.

Given your background, you might be interested in hacking around a mac-mini to "pimp your ride" and never get pulled over again.

Pretty funny.

Maybe next time you should do a simulcast with the Boston Podcast Drive Time http://drivetime.ravijain.org/
