Feeling addicted to Personal Broadband Broadcasting

There is a trend in the air. And it is already beyond the “Alpha Geek” stage. This trend is something I have been referring to as “Personal Broadband Broadcasting Networks.” The fact is that today, anyone who wants to have their own Internet TV channel can have one. Getting and keeping an audience is a different issue (Kfir Pravda has ideas about this), but these days it is possible to broadcast your own Internet TV show for free. And the fact a bunch of companies (BlogTV, Mogulus, Operator11, Ustream.TV, Veodia and more to come) are all now appearing at around the same time means to me that we will see a feature war evolve which will force these companies to push the feature sets forward on their respective products. And I wonder how long it will be before the folks at YouTube decide that “LIVE” is just a feature that they should be supporting too.

During the past couple of weeks I’ve had my own share of ad-doc Internet TV broadcasting moments over at BlogTV. In some cases I remembered to press the record button and otherwise these are moments in time that will only be known by the others who were watching when I was broadcasting live.

But from the moment I went live with my friend Kfir in the Tel Aviv airport to broadcasting my keynote live from VON Europe to the time I broadcast live when I returned to New York from Stockholm and I had Chris Broagan and then Chris Penn live from Stockholm as co-hosts to broadcasting live this week from the NXTcomm show floor in Chicago (and the back of a taxi on the way to the show) let alone from Midway Airport and then yesterday from Maureen’s Kitchen on Long Island. And then there was the time when I was broadcasting live while driving on the LIE. With all of this activity I just know that there is something special going on.

And as word gets out that with Wireless Broadband everyday people can broadcast on their own personal Internet TV channel, I fully expect commercial TV stations will to start to try using this technology platform for hard-to-reach remote locations. It will be just a matter of time before local reporters start to re-experience what it is like to broadcast live from a car using just a webcam and EvDO. There was a very similar phenomenon that took place in the summer of 1995 when the media discovered Internet Phone. I remember both Radio Stations and TV Stations doing live demos of the technology because it was a cool thing to do. Personal Broadband Networks are the 2007 equivalent and it is just a matter of time before the mass-media discovers this. Because it works. And because it is cool. :)

Welcome to the summer of 2007. The year of Personal Broadband Broadcasting. Looking forward to watching YOU go LIVE with your own channel today.

Jeff I sent out an email today to a bunch of folks trying to find out how to do this. I would like to have my own internet TV station with live and pre-recorded information. However I want to make it where you have to subscribe to view the content. Is this legal? Do I have to get some licenses and/or etc. Do you know of anyone that is doing this already? Any suggestions/comments from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

I find Mogulus to hard to understand, I spent over 15 minutes trying to get my channel on the air but couldn't do it. I think the best one so far is Operator11, though ustream works fine, but doesn't allow camera switching to interact with my friends, which is (I think) o11's greatest feature :)

Jeff - I think live is going to start dominating. Great cameras, lower costs CDNs, and higher local bandwidth are making it possible. I think that live is going to take off with more professional shows. There is only one live professional show that is always on - www.defense.mil (courtesy of TheFeedRoom). The NRA (www.nra.com) also has a professional feed but it is on only in the evenings. Professional shows can deliver advertising which is what will make them viable.

The live broadcasts on blogtv are a step in the right direction. We are always looking for what is "now" and what is real. It is very cool to be able to see you live and interact especially the live shoot at NxtCom. I think that is where some of the non professional live broadcasts could move to where you have just anyone with a N95 broadcasting an event like a political speech or trade show allowing many non-attendees to see and hear in real time the latest announcements.

Stickam is also taking off with the teenagers doing live multicasting. They are back and forth between Facebook, Myspace and Stickam. I think there is going to be a surge of Stickam users over the next few months.

Jeff - it was great to do the show with you!
I think that we will see several levels of applications out there - from "point and shoot" to more pro sites. I've about it here http://pravdam.com/2007/06/20/mogulus-proffesional-live-broadcasting/

Yeah, I've been using Mogulus to start my own internet TV station called TNIWWT TV. It's a fun experience and I see why it's taking off.
