I just got a Twitter account today. Still can't figure out what it's for or how best to use it. Great for networking or advertising, I guess, if you are a business owner but since I'm not, I can't figure out its purpose. Hints?

Now I think it's a cult.

I never thought of the search being an advantage, but in a sense it is. It means you found people either by their blog or through other people or through some other connection.

I think it started out very much a fad, moved on to trend and is now, for many people, entering the something else stage. I think if it was just a fad or just a trend I probably would have turned it off a long time ago, but I get something of value out of it, so I keep it on.

I believe what you think of Twitter depends on how you use it. I accidentally started getting some great networking done using Twitter, and I found this post there first becaues I check in on Twitter before I dig into my feeds. My vote is that it's something else.

I had to go to the site proper (instead of using Twitterrific) or if fewer people I cared about used it - then I wouldn't use it. But neither is the case, so I use it all day long. I wouldn't want to operate online without something like it.

I think Twitter, as a brand, could someday be considered a fad or a trend, but not in a negative sense. Presence apps, whether it's Twitter or your old Away message on gaim, are here to stay. They've more than proved themselves useful.

On a sidenote, my theory on one of the reasons Twitter has been so successful is that it doesn't include a real member search to speak of. I think this helps reduce Twitter's use as a hook-up service (Yahoo, MySpace) and legitimizes your communications just that much more. It feels friendlier that way, as opposed to the personal space vigilance required by other social sites.

love it.... and hate it... used to have it open all the time... but the busier I get the more distracting twitter gets....
