Wishing I was at Musenet 2007:

Musenet: "Where Music meets Technology"

Last Friday when some people in the States were waiting on line for their shinny new iPhones, friends of mine were in Israel taking part in a new "music meets technology" un-conference called: Musenet.

Musenet was first and foremost put together by the initiatives of Itay Talgam, and Ayelet Yagil. Uri Levanon, Illit Gilad, Michal Rinot, On Paradise, Eyal Person and Michal Levy all invested a lot of effort in putting it together. And as always Ami Benbassat and Yossi Vardi were very happy to be there to assist and empower the team any way they could.

While I was honored that I was amongst the people invited to the event, due to a previous commitment I was not able to be there. And that was my loss since the event was by all accounts "..nothing short of amazing."

During Musenet, various people took on any number of projects to be a part of. For his project, my friend Tal Muskal together with another person took 2 Nintendo Wii remotes (without the consul), a laptop with Reason, a Novation keyboard, and programmed a virtual drum set, or more precisely, the ability to create music according to the direction you point the remote, while changing instruments with the buttons on it.

You can see this towards the end of the following video:

My friend Tal ended up standing on stage playing the virtual drums. I thought concept of creating sounds through movement and dance instead of dancing to the beat was just a beautiful thing and it should be just a matter of time before artists ask to use such an innovation.

To get a glimpse of some of the other Musenet activities, feel free to browse the pictures from Musenet 2007 posted on flickr.

I can only hope that I am invited to attend Musenet again next year.

Congratulations to the entire team for their very hard work in making Musenet happen and contributing to its success.

Hi Jeff, many thanks for the credit.

Actually, i was just one part of the organising team, headed by:
* Itay Talgam (initiator of the event concept)
* Ayelet Yagil (walking music encyclopedia)
* On Paradise (sound magician)
* Michal Rinott (innovator of the musical chairs game)
* Eyal 'Person' (The midi-drill mechanic)
* Michal Levy (music animator)
and of course Ami & Yossi.

I was grateful to be able to take part in making this event and share some amazing moments.

The "Virtual Drums" is definitely one of the neatest thingies made there. It's so addictive...and the new version is going to be even bigger as I hear from Tal. Also Kudos for Rafi from the Garage who gave valuable tips for the coding.

Thanks Jeff, the event was amazing. you would have enjoyed it.
The friend who made this with me is Dan Shechter (you can see him in the video).

There were lots of other cool projects like: a flamethrower music instrument, tangible laptop - GarageGeeks portable version of the reactable, paddleball rackets concert, and many more very cool music related projects.
Clearly, there were also many great people who made this event possible.
