Social Media 2007: Join My Homeroom

Do you remember the feeling of starting a new school year? You would get to your assigned Home Room - perhaps a new one, perhaps the same as last year - and there would be familiar friends from last year, as well as new friends to meet and embrace throughout the new year. I feel that Facebook and Twitter afford me a similar sensation: that I can stay connected to old friends, while discovering and connecting with new ones. Some friendships fade away, but there are always new ones in the Social Media Homeroom.

Being able to refresh my personal "buddy list" at least once a year was a healthy and fun experience. And something that I missed after high school and college. especially since I was never that good at keeping in touch with people who didn't see on a regular basis.

During the past number of years my personal buddy list has gotten refreshed based on the people I have met and interacted with at the various conferences that I have produced and/or attended. But nothing seemed to replace the feeling of being in what I used to know as my "homeroom" where my attendance was noted and my school day started from. Until this year.

So far during 2007, between the people whom I have met and interact with on a daily basis on Facebook and Twitter, I am once again getting that feeling of being in a virtual homeroom. But this is a place where there are people who want to be there and people who are available 24/7 regardless of my physical location. I find myself at times staying more in touch with people that I'm connected to on these platforms than just about anywhere else. Much more so than I am used to or ever expected. There are times when I feel like I just arrived to my virtual home, closed the door and walked into the living room to check out what was going on. Except there are always people to catch up with and since my friends are geographically distributed, there are generally some people on-line no matter where I am in the world regardless of the time of day. Sometimes we just share our presence, other times we share information and small talk but the overall live experience and feeling of being connected with these people that I get is significantly different that what I had ever experienced on the Internet.

For those of you who are not on twitter or Facebook, I can't guarantee that you will have a similar feeling or common experience. But you need to first be on these platforms to have a chance to experience this.

So go ahead and join me on twitter and Facebook and be a part of my virtual "Homeroom." Everyone is welcome.

Not a "top ten list.. Only 5"

The best part of this homeroom is....

5) Information is plentiful, and it's cheaper than college!

4) If also friends on facebook you can poke your classmates and it's all good.

3) If you want to ditch class, you don't get in trouble.

2) If you fall asleep in class, nobody gets upset.
and.....

1) Not a lot of homework.

If you can think of 5-10 please post!

Jeff, I love your insight in these matters; you alwyas seem to hit the spot. Although 34 years old, I am an Internet user since 89 and friends scattered al over the globe, for me the Internet has (mostly) always been put to use for professional purposes until a few years ago. Today, living a bit remote from many of my friends and travelling quite a bit, I find that my interaction on Facebook connects me with frIends near and far and I am feeling more connected than ever with many of my friends. "My homeroom" has moved to Facebook, and my social and professional networks are merging more and more everyday.

Being a quite new user of Facebook I can already follow you regarding that as useful tool for keeping contact with friends, collegues etc.

But regarding "presence tools" I think that Jaiku beats Twitter, offering more useful facilities f.i. for commenting and creating interest groups (channels). Another new competitor here is also Pownce, which offers the possibility of distributing files.

Anyway, it is exiting to see in which ways the uprising of such services (of which we haven't seen the last newcomers yet) will affect our ways of communicating in the years to come.

Always appreciate your insights Jeff. Every since Jim Long and I began making Crafty Nation, your blog has been helpful. Looking forward to meeting you at some point.
