Second Life Launches Voice for All
As Chairman and co-founder of Vivox, I like to share Vivox updates from time to time.
Linden Lab has launched voice on the Second Life main grid for all residents. You may recall past blog posts about Vivox receiving a great reception in Second Life with their Million Minutes program and integration. Well, they are officially integrated and launched for all residents and things are going very well.
Growth has been at an amazing rate with over 120,000 users in the first 4 days!
Second Life residents are using voice for different reasons varying from educational, business, social networking and roleplaying interaction. Whatever the reason, it is clear that live and integrated voice is making in impact in virtual worlds for the better. This may very well be a good topic to explore and dig into at the Social Media Summit that I have been working on to develop. Looking forward to seeing the future of voice in Second Life continue to unfold.

I can confirm that as of today (05/22/08) I have tried the two most recent SL viewers available for Linux and Ethan's comment still holds true. The binary blob now APPEARS to exist in the SL folder, but I am STILL unable to use voice. It doesn't work, and to say "voice for all" is just a flat-out lie. I hear rumors that it DOES work for SOME Linux users, but it's ridiculous that in this modern age SL voice should be non-functional for the VAST MAJORITY of Linux users when there are a plethora of VOIP solutions and audio programs that DO work FLAWLESSLY for MOST Linux users. Are your programmers just incapable of making it work? If they are so completely unfamiliar with Linux audio, then you should either open source the code, or hire programmers who ARE familiar with coding for Linux to work on the Linux portion of the project.

It's not "voice for all" for linux users.

I am a Second Life resident, Free World Dialup user, and Linux user, and I find it rather disappointing that Vivox has so far not provided the necessary support to allow us Linux users access to the voice features of Second Life. Finally Linden Labs has released the voice-enabled viewers, including the Linux viewer... yet the Linux viewer voice feature doesn't actually work, because the closed-source Vivox binary (which is very odd in Second Life, an open-source project) is missing. We've gone around and around with the blame game, with Vivox saying one thing and Linden Labs another... yet when the final release came, it seems LL was right all along. Vivox has provided support for only two of the three platforms Second Life runs on. How long do I and my fellow Linux users have to wait to try out the voice feature of Second Life?
