Want to be a Disruptor? Innovate, Don’t Replicate. Change the Status Quo.

During the past ten years there have been numerous times where I have spoken at Communication Industry events and told the attending community the burden was upon them to develop and deploy innovative technology platforms which did not simply replicate an existing solution.

I am now seeing the same thing happen in the world of Internet TV and Internet Radio. There are quite a number of people who are now trying to figure out how to make a living by being a professional podcaster. The point is these people are simply using a technology platform to give themselves a voice. A voice which may not have been seen or heard at all before the advent of podcasting but a voice which is also down in the noise level of the internet so it is still a voice not being seen or heard by many.

The challenge as I see it for the future of podcasting is to break the mold. For the people involved to forget about legacy TV and legacy radio and to then leverage the Internet and do things with Internet based technologies which were never before practical to do with Radio or TV. Change the rules of the game or you may face becoming insignificant due to the way incumbents in a marketplace play their game. If all you have to offer is interesting content, in the long run you would better off licensing your content to an established media company than simply using the Internet to replicate an existing infrastructure.

Fear, Greed, and Disruption ARE my three often-cited catalysts for change. It is time for members of the Podcasting industry to make them their favorite words too.
