Talking Baseball: Did Glavin Finally Beat Smoltz? Yes. Does it Matter? Maybe.

While the Mets were beating the Braves yesterday afternoon and completing their sweep of the Braves in Atlanta, I couldn't help but notice how the Phillies managed to lose again to the Marlins. So it turns out what Met fans saw last week wasn't the emergence of the Phillies as a contender, but rather the complete collapse of the Mets Bullpen. No true contender is going to lose 2 of 3 games to the Marlins in September. And now while the Mets have Pedro back on the mound and facing the Reds today, the Phllies and the Braves are battling each other. And as a Mets fan, it would be great to see the Braves bounce back and help extend the Phillies losing streak and take 2 of 3 from the Phillies.

So it turns out the Mets remain their own worst enemy. A healthy starting pitching rotation together with a bullpen that doesn’t blow (many) saves and a line up that is hitting is what the Mets need if they want to have a chance to make it back to the NLCS.

And if Pedro is healthy, and can contribute to a few September victories, the prospect of the Mets playing in October gets that much stronger.
