My Social Media Birthday

Yes, today is my birthday.

While I celebrated other birthdays on the Internet, today I am experiencing my first "Social Media Birthday."

In the advent of Social Media, the way I experience my birthdays has been changing.

Last year at Video on the Net, Chris Brogan and Chris Penn surprised me and put together an amazing birthday video. One of the nicest things which happened to me in 2006. And something which still stands out in my mind when thinking about birthdays. And that was my first hint of what happens when people start to socialize using media. :)

Since moving into Facebook, one of my morning rituals has been to look and see whose birthday it is, and whenever I can, to send that person a birthday greeting. It seems quite a number of other people on Facebook enjoy doing the same. So it was a bit overwhelming, yet amazing, when I logged into Facebook this morning to be on the receiving side of a continuing stream of birthday greetings. And when a few of my friends sent birthday videos, it made the experience feel even more personal. And then I sent out a my "good morning" message on twitter, the birthday messages continued to flow in real-time from friends across time zones from around the world. And this is something I have never experienced before and something I will not soon forget.

One of my other morning Facebook habits is to catch up on my morning pokes. Generally speaking this means to poke-back at the people who poked me during the night bu sometimes I may also want to quickly say hi to someone without sending them a message that is why I might be the one who pokes first. And over the past few months quite a number of people who I share a daily poke with are members of the Israeli Hi-Tech community. So I wasn't totally surprised when attending GeekCon this past weekend that my friend Oded Sharon would team up with Hagai Jacobson and build a Rube Goldberg influenced "Jeff Pulver Poke-a-Matic 2000" to manually poke me while at GeekCon. A Video demonstration is below:

Knowing it was my birthday, Yaniv Golan, who was also at GeekCon, created The Poke-A-Pulver Day group on Facebook. As a result, this group has also kept me busy today. :)

Another social media birthday present was given to me on Monday night in Tel Aviv from: Alex Sirota, Maya Lotan and Zvika Netter who gave a t-shirt and a poster with all of my Facebook friends. Seems they have the makings of a cool Facebook application.

The evolving world of Social Media continues to provide opportunity for people to connect and communicate in ways which before just never happened.

Years ago I remember trying to explain to regulators why the advent of internet communications wasn't a threat to the established communications companies because this represented communications which would have not happened if not for the existence of Internet communications. The continued growth of real-time social communications will continue to help bring people together and provide opportunities to share many things including: presence, community, context and a feeling of connectedness without borders, connecting people with people from any spot in the world with each other.

Special thanks to everyone who reached out to me and send their birthday greetings. While I have shared my birthday on the net in past years, things are different this year and I am feeling the positive effects of Social Media and community. :)

While I know I'm getting older, I still feel the same inside and I don't think that I ever really grew up. Or maybe that's the joke, we never do "grow up", we just get a little older, and eventually, maybe, wiser. Well, maybe? :)

Thank You for another very interesting article. It’s really good written and I fully agree with You on main issue, btw. I must say that I really enjoyed reading all of Your posts. It’s interesting to read ideas, and observations from someone else’s point of view… it makes you think more. So please try to keep up the great work all the time. Greetings

Hey Jeff,
Years ago I remember trying to explain to regulators why the advent of internet communications wasn't a threat to the established communications companies because this represented communications which would have not happened if not for the existence of Internet communications. The continued growth of real-time social communications will continue to help bring people together and provide opportunities to share many things including: presence, community, context and a feeling of connectedness without borders, connecting people with people from any spot in the world with each other.

This is the magic-sounds like you're getting wiser to me. 3rd Happy Bday wish in as many locations :)

Jeff- Happy Birthday.
What do you think about this USA Today Facebook story?

They are opening up their member profiles to public web searches (those set to 'everyone').

Happy Birthday Jeff!

It's fun to watch the way you are splashing around in Social Media.

Enjoyed your interview w/kathryn v. jones. I'm interviewing her live tonight at 9:30PM at http://jonnygoldstein.com

Sounds like your Birthday is getting off to a great start.

Can't resist taking another opportunity to wish you Happy Birthday (already accomplished that task on Facebook and Twitter). You're an amazing role model for how to "do" social media, and you're reaping the benefits on your birthday.

How cool to find my face--and my crazy pink boa--on the poster of your Facebook friends.

Happy Birthday, Jeff!
