Announcing VoiceMail for Facebook
I have been involved in the world of Internet Communications since before the founding of pulver.com back in 1994. Free World Dialup now known as “FWD” was launched in 1995 and remains the longest running open communications network.
During 2007 I have been living inside the world of social media and have been thinking about the evolution of real-time social communications. A few months ago I got together with both Tom Evslin and Daniel Berninger and we decided to take another look at FWD and the role it could serve in the emerging world of social communications. In a world where Internet Communications is not just about “voice” but rather connecting people with people. And in a world where social networks represent the next generation of directories.
As a first step, FWD has released the first version of VoiceMail for Facebook. The application is available at: http://apps.facebook.com/fwdcomm. Please give VoiceMail a try and please feel free to send me a test message. Better yet, please tell your friends about our application. :)
In the near future you will be able to check your Facebook VoiceMail and originate Facebook VoiceMail using the FWD network. This will be a new feature for everyone who has an active FWD account.
For a step by step description (and commentary) about our VoiceMail application, please see the notes posted by Dan York.
Friends of FWD are invited to join our group on Facebook.

Excellent idea ..
I've been following your writings about Facebook, LinkedIn, and agree on most points. Facebook turning itself into an open platform is the future, perhaps now the conglomerates of the Internet world, e.g. Google or Microsoft will no longer have the opportunity to buy Facebook, not even for the $8 billion dollar valuation they claimed to have, say 9-12 months ago? I always believed Google should have bought them over the last two years because of integration of web-based applications, but with an open platform, end-users (individuals and businesses) can easily develop the tools and services demanded by Facebook users.
I have not had the time to surf through the thousands of Facebook applications, and I am sure one already exists, or is in development, but when I think of Google, Facebook needs to add a feature where students are allowed to enter their schedule with specific privacy settings allowing others to see when they are in class, what party they are going to, whatever. This would be specifically useful for college students that want to hang out with their friends on campus when they don't have class/waiting for class, but have no idea who is in class or not. Let me know your thoughts, even though perhaps I should have posted this on another one of your Facebook threads, I just went ahead as it was most recent :)

Love the idea, and I definitely have a FWD acct somewhere...
I am also concerned about having more places I need to check my voice mail. I think solutions like GrandCentral - universal phone and messaging may win out in the end. My 2 cents.

Arrrgh... now I will have to remember to check my home VM, cell VM, office VM and Facebook VM.
Congrats on the launch. I'm trying it out right now.
What the world really needs is a standard for VM storage and retrieval (analogous to POP3 / IMAP) so that each of us can create, store and review our VMs in the manner that best suits us.
