Look at Facebook Users Around the World:

After noting the viral growth of the Israel Network on Facebook yesterday, I started to wonder what the current penetration of Facebook usage was around the world and which countries Facebook was most popular in, where English was not the primary language spoken.

To get to these results, I did a manual mashup of the country statistics Facebook provides together with the country populations published by the CIA Factbook. My study was limited to only the 31 countries Facebook provides user information for.

Overall, Facebook currently has the highest penetration (when looking at users/population) in the following countries:

1. Canada
2. Norway
3. UK
4. Sweden
5. Australia
6. USA
7. New Zealand
8. UAE
9. Lebanon
10. Singapore

And in countries where English is not the primary language, the top Facebook countries currently are:

1. Norway
2. Sweden
3. UAE
4. Lebanon
5. Israel
6. Switzerland
7. Columbia
8. France
9. Netherlands
10. Egypt

Edit: And I would agree with metarand, the International market for social networks remains wide open.

Special thanks to Alec Saunders for telling me where to look to get to the Facebook by the Country user statistics).

Hi,

I just posted a comment on related blog post (see http://thekillerattitude.com/2007/10/facebook-statistics-in-sweden.html). Here are two bullet points that apply also to this discussion:

1) I find it amazing that a country like Finland (and also, to a smaller extent, Denmark) doesn’t show up at all in the statistics. Until I have understood why this is so, I’ll be a bit skeptical about these numbers. When I read that Sweden ranked #2 on the penetration list for non-English speaking countries, I thought Finland was likely to be #1. I guess what I had in mind was the development of mobile phone usage some ten years ago. As far as I have understood (this is off the top of my head – I haven’t checked any websites) Finland was leading that league (# of users per capita), with Sweden coming in second. To me, that development appears to be a likely parallel (surely, it cannot only haven been driven by the existence Nokia?) to the current development of Facebook users.

2) If it is indeed correct that Facebook is hardly not used at all in neither Finland nor Denmark, then that’s quite interesting in itself. More generally, it would be interesting to get a better understanding of the mechanics behind the spread of a phenomenon like Facebook. I guess it’s just one example of cultural transmission, like the spread of a new word in the language or a social norm. The closest parallel might be a new movie, perhaps in particular one that has a slow start, hardly noticed at the premiere, but then takes off thanks to mouth-to-mouth.

Nice to see that Sweden comes out as #4 worldwide.

I did some further digging into the Swedish stats (now at 11%, up from 9% since last week) and looked at both age and gender distribution. http://thekillerattitude.com/2007/10/facebook-statistics-in-sweden.html

Excellent stuff. Its going to be a great research topic.

I'd like to know, for example, how many Toronto people are part of the South African network.

Thanks!

Facebook is way better than MySpace. It's more organized and interesting. That's why it's one of the most popular sites in the world. Today I watched a video about some reasons why Facebook is so popular and an interview with Mark Elliot http://www.weshow.com/us/p/21028/mark_zuckerberg_and_facebook
and I totally agree with them.

Canadians have been early adapters to new technology over the past +10 years. By percentage of population Canadians were ahead in use of the internet, web, etc. in early days so this comes as no surprise.

I read recently that Toronto has the largest Facebook network of any city right now.
