The more virtual we become the more of our personality transpires online, as a result of which face to face meetings in real life become easier. "Why" do you ask. "simply because when you show who you are as an individual and as a person when people meet you in person they already know so much about you.
When you meet fellow tweeters what's the first thing you do? You comment on a particular tweet. That's why friendships are so much easier. You're already aware of your interest in people. That's why friendships fail via IM to physical meetings whilst twitter to real world meetings work so effectively.
