Mobile WiMAX initiative launched in Israel

The Jerusalem Post: Mobile WiMAX initiative launched in Sderot

"The rocket-hardened city of Sderot can now bill itself as one of the country's leading hi-tech hot-spots following the launch on Tuesday of a WiMAX initiative that will provide free Internet access to kindergartens, schools and Sapir College. The project is the result of a collaborative effort between 012 Smile.Communications, the Communications Ministry, Intel Corporation and Alvarion Ltd.

The state-of-the-art initiative will establish WiMAX wireless-based Internet coverage in the South. It is the first of its kind in Israel and one of the first in the world."

in talk about the killer device. i have believed for a long time that the way the wireless data revolution would take off is that first the bulk of laptops would go wireless(either cellular or WiMAX not WiFi) essentially replacing DSL/Cabel for many/most households. we will than see a shrinking revolution where size and weight come down and battery life up. the eventual product would look a lot like a smartphone. but there would be a big difference. that difference will be in the business model driving the subscription terms. all these devices would be on unlimited flat rate subscriptions with no gimmicks. with the evolution going the other way from the cell phone towards the PDA the incentive to restrict usage to preserve the current model is too great for the telecoms.

the big point is that the comparison benchmark should be against DSL/Cabel not cell phones. and a lot of people would like to cut the cord for good; many are willing to both pay a premium and even take a penalty in bandwidth. but they will not accept the FUP and other restrictions; and are not yet ready to go hand held - they just want mobility for now. do not get me wrong there is a bright future for smartphones no matter what - but what i am talking about here is massive up take on a huge scale.

lets hope WiMax deployments concentrate on this segment. if they do and they start out with adequate bandwidth capacity and do not overprice service the impact will be huge.

I would like to refer to Moshe Maeir comment and the discussion in Facebook regarding this PR.
First, allow me to mention some facts....
WiMAX has commercial deployments worldwide:
Over $400M in WiMAX solutions revenues worldwide
350+ WiMAX networks, in 100+ countries
more than 100K+ CPE’s deployed (with more than 10K wireless sectors deployed)
HOWEVER, Mobile WiMAX is a different story...it's only now commercially available (16e). will be deployed during 2008 in a few major cities/countries worldwide.
The Mobile version is very popular within the Fixed operators as well as cables and others...
this version is good not only for data transfer but also for unmanaged voice.

I think the name of the game is: killer devices. The applications are already here. The technology is here. Ubiquitous access to the Internet is important (the any time any where paradigm...)BUT I do think that the KILLER DEVICE is the name of the game (iPHONE is only the beginning ).It will bring it all to a different level. Without the killer device non of these web applications or capabilities will be relevant.

with everything that happens in this market and the many new powerful players are joining this game (from Google and Apple, through Intel, Cisco and fixed and Mobile operators)the future is not clear and not because its not widely spread/commercial yet but because each one of those players can change the rules of the game dramatically---new business models, the retail model and more...
So I think that the future is not clear because of the new players in this arena. But the technology is here and ready (commercially), so its not a barrier anymore
