Qik, ShoZu and Seesmic: Helping to Make the World a little bit Smaller

I have enjoyed watching Robert Scoble’s LIVE Qik broadcasts from Davos while sitting in my social media living room. Why watch CNN’s coverage of Davos when I can catch LIVE video from Robert Scoble, Loic Le Meur and others and interact with each of them directly? With the advent of software from companies like Qik and ShoZu, just about anyone today with camera phone can be a reporter and report LIVE from an event and then share their recorded video using Seesmic and notify their friends about the immediate availability of the video on twitter.

Back in April 2007 I first experienced UStream.tv and have become a strong believer in the future of “personal broadband broadcasting.” Less than a year later, the needle has moved again and it seems as if this is all converging into something BIG. Really BIG.

It isn’t as if similar technology hasn’t been already available for some time, as it has been. (I first saw live video streaming from a mobile phone in the US demonstrated to me by William Mutual of ComVu back at Spring 2006 VON.) But it feels as if the dots are all now connecting and aligning and that we experiencing some form of social media video chrysalis and we will emerge from this in a slightly different space.

And it is just a matter of time before both consumers and the mass-media discover these technologies. Because it just works. And because it is so cool. :)
