Personal Mobile Broadcasting: The Next BIG Thing

Real-time Personal Mobile Broadcasting is coming of age in 2008.

In 1995 it was the advent of multimedia PCs that set the stage for VocalTec’s successful launch of Internet Phone.

In 2008 it is the widespread availability of high-quality camera phones like the Nokia N95, a phone with a 5 megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss autofocus lens and supports shooting VGA video at 30fps together with the software from companies like QiK which are empowering a generation of people to be able to broadcast live streaming video from the palm of their hands just about anywhere one has access to either WiFi or wireless connectivity.

Back in 1995, VocalTec’s Internet Phone also provided the directory of everyone available to speak to at any given moment. Qik on the other hand relies on the infrastructure of twitter to announce live broadcasts and leverages the social network of their customers.

Over the weekend after watching Robert Scoble’s LIVE broadcasts from Davos I was inspired to contact my friends at Qik and get setup on their platform with my new Nokia N95 that had recently arrived. What I learned was Qik now offers seamless connectivity with Seesmic. This mean when my live Qik stream is finished, the video gets sent over to Seismic and is broadcast on Seismic on my behalf. I was impressed with how easy this all worked together.

In the near future don’t be surprised when you see someone take out their camera phone and tell you they are broadcasting their video LIVE on the Internet and that they are chatting with the people from around the world who are seeing the video in real-time. 2008 is the year of Personal Mobile Broadcasting. It seems in 2008 anyone and everyone can be a reporter and broadcast from large events like Davos or go outside during sunrise or sunset and share a moment of their life with the rest of the world.

You can catch the archives of my broadcasts on Qik over at: http://www.qik.com/jeffpulver. (I'm just getting started)

Yeh life will never be the same again with the opportunities afforded through mobile broadcasting and the surge in applications such as Qik, Shozu, uStream sitting alongside vlogs, blogs and video sharing sites will just go ballistic in 2008!

I have even found myself doing restaurant reviews with Qik and the N95 8GB last week. www.qik.com/bazflaz

Now that the mobile service providers are moving towards bandwidth caps on their 3G data plans, doesn't this put the device manufacturers and service providers at odds?

I can't even imagine (although daily I try!) all the creative opportunities that live streaming from your phone may initiate.... I fully expect apple to jump on this bandwagon.... when iphone... when will you have high quality video capabilities?????
