Looking back at my recent: "Breakfast with Jeff Pulver (and Friends) in Philly"

I thank Whitney Hoffman (@LDpodcast) for suggesting to me on twitter to add Philly to the list of cities to host a breakfast for my friends from the world of social media. Whitney was right. Philly was a great city to visit and to host a breakfast in.

I left for Philly in the pre-dawn hours and picked up my friend Geo Geller on the way. While in transit I had a chance to demonstrate Qik to Geo. Shortly after arriving at the Marathon Grill, I met friends who traveled to Philadelphia from both Washington DC and Baltimore. A few minutes later friends from the Philly area started to shuffle in.

For the first hour, I personally explained to every guest when they arrived the ideas behind “Real-time Social Tagging.” About an hour into the breakfast I made the transition from host to guest and became a guest at my own event.

I enjoyed catching up with a number of people, including: Whitney Hoffman, Don Lafferty, Dganit Platt, “Bear”, Chris “Mobile Diner” Parandian, Joel Mark Witt, Bill Rowland, Daniel Stern, Paul Muller, Denis Sinelnikov, Oliver Picher, Mark Magliocco, Steve “Podcast” Lubetkin, Christine “Purple Car” Cavalier and Brian “Alive in Baghdad” Conley. Some of these people (and others) were interviewed in this video.

After breakfast, Whitney Hoffman invited me and some of our friends over to the Science Leadership Academy (“SLA”) and I had a chance to meet and spend two hours catching up with a person who in my mind represents the future of education in America, Chris Lehmann. (More about SLA and Chris Lehmann in a future blog post.)

After visiting SLA we had lunch in a recommended local eatery and then I headed back to New York.

Special thanks to EVERYONE who came out for breakfast. I look forward to return to Philly to host another breakfast in the near future.

Thanks for coming, Jeff! Philly is developing a terrific social media community, and the breakfast was a great way to get together, not only with people we already know, but with others who are just starting to discover New Media. With schools like SLA and educators like Chris Lehmann in the area, Philly is rapidly changing for the better.

With BlogPhiladelphia and Podcamp Philly, we no longer *have* to go to New York to find out what's new and who is doing what-and developing an energetic committed community is ultimately what it's all about.

I am so glad you came, I am so glad you got to find out what we're doing here, and I am especially glad you got to meet Chris Lehmann. Chris is someone definitely to watch as a leader in transforming our schools into places kids want to go, and are developing into critical and innovative thinkers. I just wish I could have been a student there!
