MashUp Artist Dave Troy's Twittervision and Flickervision will soon be on exhibit at MoMA
Tonight my friend Dave Troy will be going to the opening night party for Design and the Elastic Mind at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
The exhibit opens to the public on February 24th and will run through May 12th.
I recently caught up with Dave Troy and asked him what he thought about having his Mashup Art selected for this exhibition at MoMa. This is what Dave had to say:
"I believe that these apps were selected and are novel (and important) because they help us see the world in a new way.
Just as every 'net innovation has been "so cool" when it is new, it's because we hadn't been able to see/perceive humanity that way before. Whether it's Amazon, e-bay, google earth, email, genealogical research, history, dating, this too is one of a string of "firsts" that people have responded to.
I don't know exactly what it is about Twittervision or Flickrvision that people find so compelling, but we all seem to. The immediacy, the sense of a global village, the added context of geography all seem to play a role.
This is also the first-ever Ruby-on-Rails app to be featured in a museum setting, for what it's worth. I told David Heinemeier Hansson this at RailsConf in Berlin and it's received some comment in that community.
In the meantime, I have been working on some behind-the-scenes plans that will tie together some of the features all of my sites.
I'm of course ecstatic about the recognition from MoMA and what this means for social media and for digital art. While this one exhibit isn't by itself going to change the world, it should serve as inspiration to designers and developers everywhere to follow their hearts, even if it's into relatively uncharted territory."

Congratulations Dave! It is great to see MoMA recognize your art and genius. :)
I'm looking forward to catching up with Dave at the breakfast I am hosting in New York City on February 26th. Later in the day, Dave will be joining me as one of my in-studio guests on The Jeff Pulver Show on pulverTV. Dave will also joining me at Spring 2008 VON.x in San Jose in March.
