Jeff Pulver on the Art of Packing for Travel

These days whenever I travel, I look to travel with only carry-on luggage whenever possible. By taking only carry-ons, I avoid empowering airlines with the ability to lose my luggage. I also end up packing lighter and end up only taking with me the things I really need.

One mental exercise I have started doing on the day that I am traveling is to allocate time a few hours before I am supposed to leave, close my eyes and imagine myself at my destination and think about the things I brought with me and the things I wish I did. I then open my eyes and make sure that I pack the things that I realized I should had taken with me. I have lost track how many times this simple technique has helped me...This is something that just works.

Hi Dave,

This is exactly what I wanted to write; since my military service (IDF) I mad a long list and every flight I read it carefully and take what needed.

I prefer to fly heavy (1 big suitcase + laptop bag for the flight), I like to have all I need, I am not carry the stuff on my back, I have taxi to do it for me, must business people I talk to obsess to fly light. Some time when i talk to this people they “compete” who pack less stuff…

And my last tip for all, and the must important tip, I check that my hotel have GYM, I wake up and go to the GYM for 1.5 hour every day, no phone, no mail, no nothing just me me me, this is the time for my self – please, do not wait for the hart attack and then say I was to busy bla bla bla…. i hope that this tip will open your mind like it did to me (I did it before my hart stop, but too many people I know die around me).

Jeff, maybe you can ask your readers and we all make a list of things for the traveler…

I also make sure I do my homework and at least check out the web site of the hotel I'll be staying at. Most hotels provide complimentary toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other basics, so these are all things I can afford to leave home - and the clear plastic ziplock bag! If I find the hotel I'll be staying at lacks these amenities... I book somewhere else.

Also, it's trivial these days to pop open a quick Google Map of where I'll be staying. Googling for drugstores and other places nearby lets me know what's in walking distance, and then I can afford to go really light, knowing anything the hotel lacks I can probably pick up at the local CVS.

Hi Dave,

Yes a checklist could work real well. :)

Perhaps as a byproduct of my training as a private pilot, I have developed 'travel checklist' which lists all the things I typically need when traveling.

It's broken down into a few categories, like 'basic', 'international', 'piloting' (in case I want to fly myself), and 'swimming/scuba'. I print a fresh copy before each trip and cross off each item (or category) as applicable.

If I discover something that belongs on the checklist, I add it, and refer to it next time. It's a simple one-pager that makes travel packing much more relaxing.
