Fearless Passion Knows No Boundaries
There have been times in my life when I was starting out in a new direction ( usually a new company, new direction, new [something]) where I didn’t necessarily know what I was doing or whether or not what I was doing would lead to success or failure. It really didn’t matter. What I knew is that I believed in what I was doing, was passionate about it, was following my heart and I was prepared to roll with the punches and deal with the consequences. I had to be fearless and prepared to deal with things as they happened. There were no other options.
If someone were to have looked into my eyes they would have seen the look of a person dedicated to doing whatever is necessary to make something happen.
When you are operating in this mode you are ready to challenge the status quo and never look back. You don’t give a damm about the business model for what you are doing, you are just doing it. In some cases just living it. From your perspective you are just “going for it” and you are prepared for the success and whatever challenges that awaits you.
I believe “fearless passion” is a secret sauce of future success.
I also believe it is important to remember your roots and remember the passion that lead to your success. I believe that as long as someone is driven by following their passion, there are no boundaries to what can be done. In fact, “Nothing is Impossible."

Thanks for this sentiment and philosophy Jeff. If this post was human I'd hug it.

Great post. To add to the passion thread.
My favorite quote.
I thought it was Goethe but it may not be:
http://www.goethesociety.org/pages/quotescom.html
So, did Goethe say it? Not really.
However, it is a great quote!
"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back-- Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now."

Fantastic post. I wanted to personally tell you this is one of the things I appreciate most about you. Your visions engulf your life and you move forward even when you don't know where you're going. You live that passion and experience the world fully. We should all live this way.

Saw Chris Brogan tweet a link to this and I agree, when you have fearless passion you are hopelessly optimistic and can set out to accomplish anything you put your mind to.

Heard about this post from a Twitter note courtesy of Chris Brogan.
Excellent post on fearless passion! You're absolutely right - when you are operating in this mode, you're bound to be in a different zone, so to speak, where your inner spirit is on fire. This is possible because you've made a firm decision to move toward something and when that happens, the universe will move mountains to assist you in your quest.
Excellent write-up! I experienced this many times in the past - when I was on Wall Street (stockbroker) and when I aimed to make history in aviation. Without "fearless passion," I would not have succeeded in achieving my dreams.
"Nothing is impossible" is right!

This post is a great motivator to me. I own a startup introducing Americans to boutique unknown niche wines from Israel - and ya gotta love it and give over a sense of passion, believe me.
I think the closest a guy can come to the creative energy of childbirth that women get to experience is being an entrepreneur.
Passion allows you to walk through walls if you let it work for you!

I think fearless passion is key however at some point you need to couple it with some kind of plan. Some people get burnt out trying to follow their passion because they let failure drag them down.

Thank you Jeff for a beautiful blog and to Chris Brogan for tweeting to it. A friend of a friend of mine had a huge job until she got fired from it a year or so ago. As the story went, the Chairman of GAP called her up and said, "You're not trying hard enough until you get fired." I love that quote.
I love passion. It is a pillar of my company's culture. (And we're pretty big now.) If you don't have passion here, you'll likely get rejected. Smart and passionate people make work fun and make really hard and really brilliant things happen. There are no limits.

Jeff:
Thanks so much for this. I have just started working independently after a lifetime of working for others. On the one hand, it terrifies me. On the other hand, I did this because it does terrify me and challenges me and is so much more rewarding as a result. I worry that I am not doing things the "right way" especially when everyone says I should have a business plan laying out goals, etc. Meanwhile, I have been too busy working to have time to lay it all out in any great detail. I'm hoping that if I follow my passion and be selective of the opportunities I follow that it will work out. The day that I am not busy, I can sit down and write a business plan and marketing plan.
Cheers,
Connie

Exactly why I am a Serial Entrepreneur! Its the passion! I love that feeling of bringing the idea to life. If you're passionate about something you are more likely to succeed, your passion is contagious.

Like MH, I'm in the process of taking a non-profit organization to the next level. Trying to keep that passion in front of me in the face of several obstacles.

You said it! What great inspiration. I'm a freshly minted entrepreneur and self doubt is surely the devil. I'm not sure I know what I'm doing (blending my marketing expertise and affinity for social media and non profit work into a big whirlygig of a business) or that it will work (egads there are a lot of smart people out there) but I'm so sure that I did the right thing by walking away from the corporate job, no matter how many people thought (and still think) I was crazy.
Thanks for the affirmation!

Fearless Passion with a focus is very important. I have seen far to many times in my young career fearless passion without a strong focus on a goal.
Posted by: Andrew Norton at June 4, 2008 03:38 PM
Thanks for reminder.
I think it's also important to stay tuned for your goal. Because there are so many things that try to pull you off. I use inspirational posters and affirmations during the day to remind me.

Thank you!!! Just what I needed to hear today! I would have accomplished nothing this past year without that very philosophy, And yet... I still struggle to remember that our passion is divinely inspired... our light in the attic. While we may not know where our passion will lead, it is, i think, our destiny to follow it, and those who sidestep the challenges and paths that our passion leads us to are often left, i think, living a life of "what if?".

yo jeff - what do you mean nothing is impossible - if it is nothing how can it be impossible and if nothing is not nothing but something then qed all things are possible and impossible at the same time :-) - the greater the risk the greater the return - the more you risk the more your risk failure the more you risk success - or as somebody once said those who fear failure also fear success - or was it some guy name jeff pulver who once said while driving down the LIE (long island expressway) "the power of one is more then the power of none" - hmmm i get these somebodies all mixed up - but i agree so fearless passion is the challenge - and sometimes security is our real prison - go for it life is short - g-oh

For all the planning, analysis and hard work, there will always be things beyond your control. The only way to overcome, is "Freedom from Fear" (from DDB Worldwide). And perhaps more important is the ability to cause others to shed their doubts and passionately pursue the possible.
Love it. Thanks for sharing, Jeff.
Also enjoying your modern era hunt for "resources". Hope you find more "oil".

Hey Jeff - great post! Thanks for tweeting about it...
I am in the process of trying to startup an online humanitarian organization and every post (like yours above) that I read helps me to get a little further along in the process.
Man, sometimes it seems as though the odds are stacked against startups and then add on top of that trying to create a non-profit.
Have a GREAT day and thanks for the inspiration.

Hey Jeff, I think this is a great post, being Scottish, my country is traditionally skeptical, so this really relates to what im going through, but its a great challenge, its refreshing to read this from someone who is successful. It adds a little bit more tenacity to keep improving. Cheers.

Jeff, great words. I'm in the middle of turning my entire world upside down in just about every way possible and no matter how hard it's been, most days (say 95% of the time) I know it's the right thing for me. This morning I was second-guessing the changes and plans and then I read this and I'm on track again. Thank you. Your words helped and focused me again more than you know.

That's totally truth in my opinion. I think also that there is no obstacle in front of you if you really want to achieve something like create a business from your idea. Every problem can be solved if you really want to.
