Challenge the Status Quo. Innovate!
Just because everybody always did things one way doesn't mean it was ever the best way of doing something or even the right way. There are times when YOU need to challenge YOUR ways and do things the way YOU feel they should be done.

Be prepared to be attacked in some manner when you do things differently. Be prepared to question your own values when you do things differently. Especially, be prepared to let go when it becomes evident that you were wrong....as you will be from time-to-time....though, not always.

That's a great point Brian! When we shut down all our ideas before we have a chance to try them, we get nowhere. And when we believe we can do something, our brain automatically starts finding ways for us to make it happen.

If you really (that is a can of worms) want to innovate the first thing you need to do is exactly what Jeff said... it is not the frowning faces or the knowing smirks that cause us to fail to innovate... it is our own failure to get far enough out of the box to really BELIEVE what we just thought.
True innovation is about finding a way to create what you believe to be possible - which is pretty tough when you believe so little IS POSSIBLE.

Yes!
We live in a wonderful technologically advanced world, that allows us more creative freedom and personal potential to reach people than we've ever known.
WHY give up that freedom to be "just like everybody else?"
I know there is a certain way I'm "supposed" to do things, but I can't get behind it. My gut doesn't support it as the right choice for me, and most importantly, I can't get excited and passionate about it. These things are not true for "my way."
With my way I get up excited, I'm passionate about what I'm doing. I know it's a long, hard road, but it's MY damn road. And that freedom is more important to me than nearly anything else.
I cannot be a cog in someone else's machine.
Viva La Resistance!
