Making Memorable Moments

Sometimes we get lost in our own lives and the lives of others.

Sometimes we lose ourselves in the blur of the world around us and other times we are the blur in our own lives.

And then one day we wake up and try to remember who we are and who we once wanted to be.

Many times we do we don’t remember the things we did the next day let alone a week later. Our daily routine is just that, a routine. A rote memory that repeats itself day in and day out. “Making Memorable Moments” is something I try to make an effort to do when life gives me an opportunity to do so.

When I attended the reunion of my elementary school class earlier this year and walked around the room with my video camera and asked my old friends “What do they remember about me” and they all individually said “nothing” except the one person remembered “my father’s dark room”, I felt pretty devastated. What I thought would be a fun introspective video turned into a personal low I had a hard time recovering from. And on the way home from the event I thought about the Counting Crows song “Have you Seen Me Lately.”

I believe everyone wants to be remembered. Even as kids. As least I did. So not being remembered make me feel invisible and made me question why I was even there.

While I can’t go back in time and change the past, I can change the future. Maybe not every day and not every time, but sometimes I will be someplace and do the unexpected and surprise myself. Every situation is different but I try to do something that will surprise me and that will share something of myself with everyone around me and might have the effect of making that moment into a more memorable moment.

I believe if we make an effort, we can take back our lives and our future and make each moment meaning and special.

Why not try to do something every day that is different? And if not every day, then as often as your schedule allows. Whether you are out doing something with your family or with your friends: at dinner or with new friends attending a corporate event, there is something of yourself that you can share that will make that moment a special one. we can create our own special memories of our live. And we should. Regardless of our age, I believe we owe it to ourselves to go out and not just do something ordinary, but do something memorable and maybe remarkable. How you do it is up to you.

And maybe next time in the forward future there will be someone who can tell you the things they remember about YOU.

just to clarify a point. The reunion was an 8th grade reunion. Most of the kids attended the school for k-8. I was there for grades 1-6. So yes, I suspect someone would "remember" something. It was six years of shared experiences and shared teachers.

I found this post touching and instructive.

It would never have occurred to me to attend a kindergarten reunion, since children that age are so definitely ME oriented that I wouldn't expect them to remember anything other than how they felt at the time.

However, I could definitely relate to wanting to be memorable to others - to have the assurance that one has been seen, one's existence as part of the human community acknowledged. But I've learned that the best place for that acknowledgment lies with our friends and family.

Acknowledgment from those who don't really know us is the type that results in pseudo celebrity. The true measure of our contribution is seen (but seldom recognized) in the way those we love feel about us. Many of our contributions can never be known by us because they are part of the ripples in the direct effect we may have on the lives of others. You help someone and because of that, he or she is able to help someone else and so on. You may never know about that third person,or fourth person, but you had an effect on him, just the same.

Of course you know the obvious answer to the question you implicitly ask here: what we do when we are kids need not be noteworthy so long as we are happy and grow up to be mature, self-confident, and happy adults.

I know for a fact that in your adulthood you've touched the lives of thousands directly, and possibly millions indirectly through your actions, advocacy, and investment.

So what if you were wallpaper in Kindergarten? Most times kids at that age stand out for all the wrong reasons...

I am sure most people don't remember me, and just don't care. That's alright. McDonald's has served over a billion customers, and that doesn't make their food haute cusine or the best food for your health. The people who have contributed the most have not really been widely acknowledged. I think that the point is to be the best you can be. This way you may not influence a continent or the world in your lifetime, but perhaps you can influence the future in the most beautiful of ways.
