Call for Speakers: SocComm / The Social Communications Summit - February 10-11 2009 in New York City
Today I am announcing a new event I’m calling SocComm, an event which will explore the state of “Social Communications”, where things are headed in the future and where the money is today and will be tomorrow.
The success of VocalTec’s iPhone in 1995 opened up my eyes to a future where individuals will one day be self empowered to communicate with whomever and whenever they want to, in a world where “Voice” is just an application and not a service.
In 2008 Apple proved it is possible to redefine what was a mature marketplace and introduce innovation and opportunity. And I believe we are only at the beginning of a revolution in the future of communications.
When I think of Social Communications, there are many ways to define this. And I’m looking at the universe of ways - everything from the way some people express themselves in: blogs, YouTube, Flickr, Seesmic and others in their Facebook status messages and their updates on Twitter.
Billions of minutes of Social Communications will be generated in 2009 by people playing in a variety of online games - including: Call of Duty, Guitar Hero World Tour to MMOGs such as EVE Online and those hanging out in Second Life. Over time, billions will become tens of billions, to hundreds of billions and more.
“Presence” is quickly becoming the trigger point for communication. I grew up in an era where the dial-tone on my home phone meant something to me. Today and in the future I believe that Presence is the new Dial-tone and that more and more communication sessions will happen because of presence. The evolution of presence has huge implications for a number of industries, including: advertising, media and telecom.
When I think of presence I also think back to the promise of location based services I first heard about in the late 90s. But rather than have an advertisement push to my mobile phone based on my location, I’m more interested in gaining information from my trusted friends when I’m in a location based on a filter such as my mood. And as advertising models evolve, they too will be effected by social communications.
It turns out that Social Communications is a pretty broad term which could mean many things to many people, and I’m fine with this. What I hope to explore on February 10th and 11th are the pieces of Social Communications that mean the most to my friends and their friends and together help define a new industry.
So I’m putting out this “Call for Speakers” and looking for creative, out-of-the-box thinkers to come forward and pitch me about a topic they are passionate about and would like to speak about. (Practical talks are also welcome.)
What I hope to bring together is a gathering of people with a variety of backgrounds and industries and together explore the future of where things are going and what business models will be used to provide the dollar returns needed to get us there. I expect to bring together people from across the worlds of: Media / Internet / Communications / Entertainment. Something I would call a "MICE" event.
If you are interested in speaking at SocComm, and or would like to suggest a speaker, please contact me ASAP. The deadline for speaking proposals is December 5th but the first to approach me will be the first I consider for the event.
The event website is: http://www.SocComm.com and I would appreciate your help in spreading the word about my new event.
SocComm 2009 will be taking place February 10-11 in New York City. I look forward to your involvement.
