Do you suffer from Idea Heartburn?
Have you ever found yourself thinking about something, getting distracted and then finding yourself exploring that same idea again and again and yet again?
If this sounds familiar to you, then you may be suffering from what I call: “Idea Heartburn.”
The ideas that keep on repeating on you will eventually demand your attention. The sooner you focus on the idea and take action, the quicker the idea will stop giving you idea heartburn.
The only medicine I know for Idea Heartburn is acting on the idea.
Act on the right idea, and it could change your life. Act on the wrong idea, and well, it might create actual heartburn and more. But before I discourage anyone following their own ideas, I need to mention I am someone would much rather have tried something and failed then not tried at all.

"Even a great idea, is only an idea, until you make it real."
Thanks for the posting Jeff. We see this problem everyday with our clients. We take a systematic approach to dealing with the problem by gaining management support to see the ideas through.
Failure is just as valuable as success in that there is an outcome.
Companies (and individuals) would gain by doing more and talking less.

Idea heartburn? I have idea ulcers! my challenge is to focus on one at a time. So often I need to just write them down and wait until I can dedicate some time to research and test.

Jeff, very well said. Enjoyed your post. I am also LMAO at the concept of Ideamentia. Oh my word, Matt, too funny! :-)

Good stuff Jeff! For every action, there is a reaction, etc. Now if I could just remember all those ideas that keep popping up! I think that they call that ideamentia?

Studies show that the longer you "sit" on an idea the less likely it is you'll ever do it. Best suggestion you can give somebody with a project plan is simply Start Now. Nice post Jeff.

Albert Einstein said "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results."
An idea that is not executed upon is just that - an idea. A risk that is never taken is just that - a risk.
Ideas only hold power if they are put into action. The main reason why people get idea heartburn is fear of the unknown. We come up with so many reasons why our ideas will never fly (people will think I'm stupid, I don't have any money, I don't have any time..and so on).
If we sit around and wait until we have the perfect circumstances (time, money, confidence) to execute on our ideas they will never happen.
Taking one step every day can help your ideas to become reality. Pick up the phone. Meet some new people and talk to them about it. Do some research. Figure out how you're going to get that money. Solve the problems that hold you back from executing your idea and you'll find those ideas becoming reality before you know it.
Thanks for indulging - I think my comment is longer than your original post, Jeff! :)

Occasionally, yes. I'd say very creative people such as fiction authors get this all the time and even have recurring themes for unfinished ideas running through their minds on an ongoing basis lest they complete the work. Not only would I say action is the solution but I would pontificate that it is the subconscious not only filtering through the idea and actually calling for action. A well wired brain could be very persistant and this likely explains to some extent the abilit, want and need for creative people to burn the midnight oil regardless of all other needs and any obvious shortage on the immediate reward front.

My understand is.. somewhere beneath the surface of consciousness.. there's all this fun stuff going on.. reacting to the challenges of waking life.. so that what breaks an idea into consciousness is.. related to the roots of what ever it is that is the questions / conflicts / challenges it's meant to answer.
"bad ideas" and even tensions and anxieties.. all the contents of consciousness really, are there for a reason. Nietzsche says 'beware of throwing out you're demons less you throw out the best thing you got going for you.' The real challenge is to find ways of facilitate there constructive expression in your life. Buddha, sitting in the immovable spot at the center of the universe, by the bogia tree, seeking enlightenment, is a metaphor of this.. Where fear and desire was transmuted from what you might consider a dark force.. to a constructive one.
Generally.. a bad idea is only bad to the extent to which it conflicts with you're conscious attitude.. how it relates to a kind of psychic ecological situation.. even as it might not be wise to follow it.. there is, within it, a seed of value to be found in it..
Here in lies the truth to.. well how through sin comes wisdom.
But maybe that's a strange way of saying it.

I think I'm suffering from permanent idea heartburn. I have lots of ideas churning around in my head, most of them involve money and that's the main reason why they're still churning around in there and keep coming to the foreground once in a while.
