Report from the Road - Today’s Wednesday must be San Francisco

I have been on the road for the past week and almost immediately fell into “blur mode.” Every time I have sat down to try to write a blog about about an element of my trip, it seems I was running late for a breakfast (or dinner) and it is only now that I am catching up. What I is written below is a quick recap this trip so far.

Last Tuesday (January 6th) I left New York for Las Vegas for CES 2009 to produce “Social Media Jungle” on January 7th at CES. (JFK-->LAS)

After landing in Las Vegas, I was taken by the Zappos Shuttle for a tour of their facility. I enjoyed the time spent at Zappos and taking the tour with both Jeff Sass and Warren Whitlock. At the end of the tour we had a chance to catch up with two of the people at Zappos responsible for social media. A few hours later I hosted a dinner for the speakers participating in the Social Media Jungle the following day.

On Wednesday, January 7th Social Media Jungle took place at CES 2009. It was great having: Chris Brogan, Jeremiah Owyang, Robert Scoble, Warren Whitlock, Ben Grossman, Jeff Sass, Chris Heuer, Susan Etlinger, Dan Honigman, Kevin Sablan, Etan Horowitz, Dean Landsman, Howard Greenstein, Justin Levy, Jeremy Toeman, Dave Taylor, David Berkowitz, Eric Weaver and Carlos Hernandez participate at the event. Overall Social Media Jungle was a great event.

I also announced the Call for Speakers: The Social Media Jungle 2009 Road Show.

On Thursday, January 8th I walked the CES 2009 Show floor and enjoyed catching up with the Boxee team and connecting with Sol Lipman, co-founder of 12Seconds.TV. While talking with Sol, took advantage of the opportunity to interview him which can be seen in this video: 83 Seconds with Sol Lipman. Later in the day I attended a 3D screening of the BCS Championship game. I enjoyed watching live 3D TV and a chance to see something we will be experiencing in the future. I also enjoyed spending a couple of minutes catching up with Mark Cuban at the event.

After having breakfast with Chris Brogan on Friday morning, I left Las Vegas and flew in the afternoon to San Francisco to attend The Crunchies 2008. I thought the Crunchies was a fun show and it was great to see everyone who came out for the event. I especially enjoyed the face-to-face networking that took place afterwards at City Hall and later in the lobby lounge of the W Hotel. Sometime later I realized I never had dinner that night so I ended up going on an adventure with a few friends to find food and eventually ended up at Mel’s. (LAS-->SFO)

On Saturday morning (January 10th), I was up early and flew from San Francisco to Vancouver. I was greeted at the airport by Matthew Snyder and his wife and his dog and we headed up to Enigma for lunch. After going to two Staples to re-stock my real-time social networking supplies, I headed to my hotel and had dinner with my friend Ian Bell and attended a local tweetup aftwarewards. (SFO-->YVR)

On Sunday morning (January 11th) I hosted my first breakfast for 2009 at Enigma and was pleased to see 35 people from the greater Vancouver area join us. After breakfast Matthew Snyder was kind enough to drive me back to the airport where I took a flight to Los Angeles. Sunday night I caught up with my friend Sandy Climan and his family and had a great dinner in Bevery Hills. (YVR-->LAX)

I spent part of this trip working on the agenda for SocComm - the Social Communications Summit and on Monday (January 12th) I finally posted this update. Later in the day I had lunch with Kevin Sablan and Jon Lansner from the Orange County Register and discussed “The Future of Newspapers” which was a follow up to a discussion that started at the Social Media Jungle at CES. A few hours later I was in Westwood for Blob Live LA, an “open mic night for ideas” which was created by my friend Ami Kassar. I enjoyed listening to the open sharing of the ideas so much that by the end of the night, I ended up going on stage and asked for suggestions on ways to better leverage opportunities created by my real-time social networking breakfasts. After the event I had a late dinner with Ami and my old friend Jeremy Pepper.

On Tuesday (January 13th) I hosted my first breakfast (ever) in Los Angeles which took place at Nate-N-Al’s in Beverly Hills. 25 people joined us, including a few people I met the evening before at Blob Live LA. After breakfast I headed to Santa Monica and then to Venice and a few hours later I flew from Burbank to San Jose. On my flight to San Jose I ran into my old friend Phil Hellmuth and I enjoyed the quality time we had to talk on the flight. On his way home, Phil drove me to the Palm parking lot in Sunnyvale where I had a chance to catch up with my friend Jonathan Sherman who then drove me to San Francisco. After checking into my hotel, I then headed over to the home of my friend Ohad Eder Pressman for a friendly poker game. (BUR-->SJC)

This morning (January 14th) I am in San Francisco and soon will be hosting my third breakfast of the year at Sears Fine Food. I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone who will be joining the breakfast. During the day today I have a few meetings and tonight I will be catching up with some of the people whom I have gotten to know at Kinnernet over the years.

Tomorrow morning (January 15th) I have an early morning flight back to New York.

I am looking forward to returning home.
